Christian fraternity sues University of Florida
Source: ABC Action News

A Christian fraternity alleging discrimination is taking the University of Florida to court.

Beta Upsilon Chi's lawsuit says the university refuses to recognize it as a registered student group.

According to the lawsuit filed in federal court in Gainesville, school officials told the group it can't be registered because only Christian men are eligible for membership.

The organization that governs the university's Greek system prohibits religious discrimination.

1. They are really not a fraternity
by the rules set out. They can call themselves whatever they want, but basically they are a student organization for Christians only, and would be better suited to be amongst the student church organizations, imho.

2. Imagine that. Discriminating against them just because they discriminate.
There's nothing wrong with discriminating...er, umm, I mean, discrimination is terrible.

It would be entertaining to see this group arguing its case in court.

3. Argue their case in court?
In their world, simply by filing the complaint, they get to take a pull on the giant Slot Machine o' Justice these clowns are convinced is in every courtroom in America. And if three cherries (or three crosses) come up, jackpot! What is this "arguing" a case you speak of? Evidence? Testimony? What?

4. Discrimination because they want to discriminate
What a hoot.

It's sad when people don't see how stupid they are acting. That is what happens when you get involved with a group of people that slaps each other on the back. No disagreeing opinons heard or allowed. It doesn't allow room for thought. These folks didn't think this one through. They believe they are right, because no one spent time thinking they could be wrong. They thought it, so it must b e true.. slap, slap, slap. Let's go!

6. Easy solution to this
Register them as a student group, then file a suit against THEM if they continue to discriminate!

12. My first day in Gainesville ...
...I hadn't even had time to unpack my suitcase before one of these Christian guys was knocking on my dorm room door inviting me to Bible study/church/whatever.

I politely declined (being there to party not pray).

He was back the next day.

And the next.

And the next.

For three straight semesters.

Talk about your oppressed!

10. Yep, no mention of a group of bigots
fitting the definition of "fraternity"

# Fraternities and sororities in Canada and the United States

* Honor societies, organizations in which membership recognizes scholastic excellence
* Class societies, organizations in which membership is limited by year of study
* Literary societies, organizations formed as a student-directed supplement to the academic curriculum
* Professional fraternities, organizations which promote fellowship among those in a particular academic discipline or career field
* Service fraternities and sororities, organizations whose primary purpose is community service
* informally, a fraternity or sorority house, group housing for members of a fraternity or sorority

15. I would have to believe this group must be idiotic IMO
As a fraternity they cannot solicit funds from the University.
As a service organization they can.

They can operate as a service organization. It might be that they can't because there already is a christian organization.

Unless there is something else they are totally out of luck.

16. I shiver whenever I see an attempt to create a wedge issue for the SCOTUS to use where they please..
A vaguely-worded ruling can be interpreted as a precedent in many ways. They've done this before; test a small court so that the larger ones can carry it wherever they please. They've done it with abortion, with prayer in schools, with religious icons (only theirs, others need not apply) in public spaces...

They're systematically whittling away the barriers to Christian-friendly laws, and lawmakers.

And I'm someone who believes in God. That's how far away I believe these militaristic, bullying, xenophobes are from doctrine. And anything that could be good for the rest of us. Freedom means they can do that, and I can do this, and neither of us can stop the other so long as there is no injury.
