City Letter Carriers Get 5-Year Contract (222,000 mail carriers)
Source: Washington Post

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Postal Service and its city letter carriers reached a tentative five-year contract agreement Thursday.

The National Association of Letter Carriers said the agreement, covering 222,000 mail carriers, will be submitted to its members for approval.

Postal officials confirmed that an agreement had been reached extending through 2011. The contract is retroactive to last November.

The union said the pact covers increases in wages, cost of living adjustments and includes new limits on contracting out work done by city letter carrier.

2. it was last I heard, also
the main reason that NALC didn't want to compromise was because of the entire contracting out business.

It would not be a good thing to have just anyone contracting out and delivering the mail. I may be a little biased, as I am a 13year veteran of NALC Branch #47.

3. Let me make it three letter carriers
I retired recently, I guess the USPS was afraid of arbitration. William Miller caused this whole situation.

4. I just read over my unions announcement
and all in all, it sounds pretty good. President Young did say that they had to agree to higher health care costs, but we will receive COLA's that total 8.5 % over five years.

But our main issue was the contracting out. It looks like pressure from Congress and the public helped. Here is the statement that was sent to me.

I wanted to notify the union’s e-Activists first because all of you deserve a lot of the credit for what we have achieved. Thanks to the political and legislative pressure you exerted on Congress, the Postal Service finally returned to the table to deal with the key threat of letter carrier outsourcing. Our success as grass roots lobbyists and in organizing strong informational pickets in the field forced the Postal Service to abandon its rigid positions on outsourcing. Thanks to all of you, we were able to avert the need to go to interest arbitration.

The new contract will protect all existing city carrier work against outsourcing over the term of the agreement and a national Joint Committee will seek to address the issue of Contract Delivery Service for new deliveries during a six-month moratorium on outsourcing in offices where city carriers work. For this reason, we will ask Congress to pause for a few months before acting on a legislative ban on contracting out. But if we do not get a satisfactory contractual solution to this problem, I will be calling on you once again to help us win a legislative prohibition

Congratulations on your recent retirement, KingofallDems! Enjoy these years- you've earned it.
