All-male secret society wants to log idyllic redwood grove
Source: AP

MONTE RIO, Calif.—Members of the Bohemian Club began arriving Thursday for the secret society's annual male-bonding session, but the club's directors are facing a public battle with environmentalists, who want to block a plan to log the surrounding riverside forest.

The club wants a special logging permit to cut more than 1 million board feet per year in perpetuity in the Bohemian Grove on Sonoma County's Russian River—the closest unprotected redwood forest to San Francisco, about 70 miles south.

The bounty would build 70 houses a year from the old coastal redwood. Some trees are more than 300 feet tall and 1,000 years old.

Members of the 135-year-old club have included Charles Schwab, Colin Powell, Donald Rumsfeld, Henry Kissinger, Walter Cronkite and every Republican president in the last century.

"Bohos" have written to the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, saying the plan would decrease wildfire risks. But scientists at the state Department of Fish and Game, the Sierra Club and other institutions say the plan would degrade habitat and give the club cutting rights with inadequate oversight. A public hearing is expected in late summer.

2. It;s hard to believe that they would piss in their own champagne, but
I have given up trying to understand these people. Even if they don't have any interest in not destroying this environment, you'd think they would be interested in preserving their little country club up there that would be nothing without the trees. They might as well have a club in the middle of the Atacama desert because that is what would be left (the same terrain, proximity to ocean, and possible weather patterns without the trees)once the shelter and ecological contributions of the ancient forest is destroyed. However, business seems to trump all. I wonder how many of their children they have sold into servitude because the money was good. (metaphor here for those who take my words at face value at times.)

17. well, I suppose they think that as long as they have a couple of trees to urinate against ...

... everything else is redundant! (speaking of the peeing thing)

http://www.sonomacountyfreepress.com/bohos/inside-spymag.html

"And former California governor Pat Brown has said publicly, many times, that the presence of women would keep Bohemians from enjoying their hallowed freedom to pee.

The peeing is ceaseless and more than a little exhibitionistic. Everyone talks about it. Bohemian reminiscences describe such bizarre initiation rites as escorting new members to the redwood at which one of the founders "did his morning ablutions." The Owl Hoots, which are poster-size cartoons racked up each day near the Camp Fire Circle, are filled with pissing pictures. One featured a spurious design for a commemorative stamp of club member U.S. Postmaster General Anthony Frank relieving himself on a redwood."

Ironically -- wasn't it the Boho Club that bought up the surrounding land, decades ago, because they were concerned that logging (and the public intrusions that would come with it) would endanger their little retreat?

4. Oh, great...
Not only do these boho fucks love to hold their secret world-domination planning rendezvous under the majestic redwoods every year, but they now want to mine the forests they don't already use for their frolicking "Cremation of Care" rituals to make even more money to fund their war-mongering power grabs.

19. I tree planted there
Many years ago (10 I'd guess), I enrolled in the Santa Rosa JC Nat. Res. Class to tree plant. For at least two years, maybe three I planted redwoods where they had clear cut them. What a shame they want to cut them.

I went to the Pacific Lumber Dinner where their forester stated they wanted to break all their property into 60 parcels so they could clear cut everything in 60 years and then start over. I didn't read the Montery Herald post, but guess Boho wants to do a similar Management Plan?

Thanks for the post, ADW

29. sad, isn't it -- they can't even do the "bohemian" thing right ... (link to interesting article)
http://sociology.ucsc.edu/whorulesamerica/power/bohemian_grove.html

They wouldn't even be able to put on those elaborate shows they pride themselves on so much, without all the time and effort donated by the lower-ranking "associate" members.

So much for joyful spontaneity!

"Costs are on the order of $130,000 to $150,000 per High Jinks in 2004 dollars, a large amount of money for a one-night production which does not have to pay a penny for salaries (the highest cost in any commercial production). "And the costs are talked about, too," reports my second informant. "'Hey, did you hear the High jinks will cost $150,000 this year?' one of them will say to another. The expense of the play is one way they can relate to its worth.""

34. Has anyone here read "Significant Others"...?
It's one of the sequels to Tales of The City, and a large part of the plot line involves the conflict between Bohemian Grove and a radical feminist camp located right next to it. Quite funny!

25. Fire danger?
Redwoods, in a properly maintained forest, don't burn. Their bark is too thick, and their branches are too high. Fires that should be allowed to go through any wilderness area from time to time reduce the fuel load and keep any other trees from getting tall enough to catch the redwoods on fire.

If these overrich, bored dopes aren't maintaining their area properly as it is, why give them permission to further despoil the property?

32. When I was a youngster I played in those redwoods...the same ones
that are there 50 years later and were there 1000 yrs before...standing in them is an ethereal experience, they are pure magic. Anyone even contemplating cutting them has to be minus a soul. Its as if they are trying to kill their creators. Even though these men of the Bohemian cl. are some of the most powerful crooks on earth, the people of northern Calif will not let it happen.....they will circle the redwoods with their bodies if necessary.
This is not some 100 yr old forest of pine trees it is a thousand yr. old enclave of the purest peace that will grow no where else on earth. What is it with these crooked minds...will they next turn Yosemite into granite building blocks and counter tops?
