Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas qualifies his support of Bush’s Iraq policy
By DAVID GOLDSTEIN
The Star’s Washington correspondent

WASHINGTON |
As the Republican bloc continues to crack in the Senate, Kansan Pat Roberts, usually a reliable backer of President Bush’s Iraq policy, says his support is “not locked into concrete.”

“We have to make some very tough decisions,” Roberts said in an interview this week. “We can’t continue to be engaged in a war which the American people do not support.”

Roberts said he won’t support any measures yet to begin withdrawing troops, because he’s worried about the chaos that could result.

“I don’t know the answer,” said the former chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. “I don’t know anybody that does. I know the president thinks he does. His resolve is incredible, whether or not that’s the proper course of action.”

2. A little wiggle room for Roberts' unopposed 2008 re-election bid?
Maybe there is someone poised and ready to toss the hat in the circle, what with Roberts’ approval ratings sagging around 51 percent.

6. Sorry, Roberts! You Bushie now!
It doesn't matter if you moderate your Iraq position of if you change to a new Comcast phone! You've made your bed by being the biggest enabler of a majority GOP congress which BS'ed this country into an elective war. Your chairmanship of the Senate's 'Insulting America's Intelligence' committee allowed the lies to exist which have cost over 3609 US military deaths and over one half of one trillion dollars.

Like the tiger-striped 'Roger' in the commercial who changed his phone and expected a different response form his tattoo artist who simply answered, "Sorry, Roger! You tigah, now!", we must say to Sen. Roberts, "Sorry, Roberts! You Bushie, now!"

7. What about the chaos that is there now?
Edited on Fri Jul-13-07 09:43 AM by mvd
A phased and orderly withdrawal should alleviate any concerns. Political pressure will likely start withdrawal in 2008 anyway. Bring them home now and avoid more death.

8. Sort of for it before he was kind of against it.
Hey, Pat--how about resigning so that someone who does know can have a turn?
