Rep. Almond quits; mystery lingers

State Rep. David Almond Jr. abruptly resigned his House seat Thursday, leaving grim-faced colleagues and a host of questions about the allegation that pushed him out the door.
An unidentified government employee filed a complaint against Almond, a Stanly County Republican, with House Speaker Joe Hackney last week.

Almond, an insurance agent, referred to the complaint in a statement he released through the House GOP caucus. Almond said he would defend himself against the charges "in whatever forum may be appropriate." He did not characterize the charges.

Hackney, an Orange County Democrat, said he has no more action to take on the personnel complaint because Almond is no longer a legislator.
