Argentine court overturns pardon
By Daniel Schweimler
BBC News, Buenos Aires

Argentina's Supreme Court has revoked a pardon granted to a former general accused of human rights abuses.

Santiago Omar Riveros is accused of more than 40 crimes against humanity which were committed during the military rule of 1976-1983.

The ruling opens the way for all of those accused of involvement in the "Dirty War", in which an estimated 30,000 people were killed, to be tried.

Mr Riveros was pardoned in 1989 by the then President Carlos Menem.

Take time to recall that it was Bush family friend, Carlos Menem who pardoned these horrendous human suffering enthusiasts/vampires during his Presidency. Hearing they can be tried should shame the hell outta him, but that's so unlikely. Right-wingers have no consciences.

Carlos Menem, visiting his pal, #41.

2. It really sucks when all those nations we feel superior to beat us.
In healthcare, jurisprudence, and fucking common sense.

3. South America is leading the way on so many matters! And I hope they are
showing us the way on this, too--revoking pardons, at some point, after we have restored our right to vote, and our right NOT to have rightwing Bushite corporations 'counting' our votes under a veil of corporate secrecy. Then we'll see some action.

Invalidating the 2004 election on the grounds that the election system was inherently fraudulent (unauditable, unrecountable, tabulated with 'trade secret' code) (--and maybe the 2000 election as well). For starters. Then, invalidating and undoing all Bush court appointments, all commutations of sentences and pardons (let the trials begin!), and all executive orders.

Erase the Bush Junta, and start over.

Viva la revolución!

General accused of torture loses presidential pardon

The Supreme Court ruled that a 1989 presidential pardon of a general accused of crimes during the country's Dirty War was unconstitutional.

BY MAYRA PERTOSSI
Associated Press

BUENOS AIRES -- The Supreme Court threw out a 1989 presidential pardon Friday that absolved a former army general of alleged human rights abuses during Argentina's dictatorship.

The ruling that the pardon of Gen. Santiago Omar Riveros was unconstitutional opens the door for lower courts to reconsider dozens of other pardons granted after the end of the 1976-83 military regime.

The court's seven members voted 4-2, with one abstention, that Riveros can be tried for illegal abductions, torture and killings of dissidents during a crackdown known as the Dirty War.
(snip)

Last year, former police investigator Miguel Etchecolatz was convicted of genocide and sentenced to life imprisonment. That trial was marred by the disappearance of the chief prosecution witness, torture survivor Jorge Julio López, who remains missing.

5. That's how you GET to be wrong-wingers in the first place. You leave
your conscience at the door. Assuming you even had one to begin with.
