Baby Cereal Recalled Over Choking Hazard
Source: Associated Press

(AP) Gerber Products Co. recalled all packages of its organic rice and organic oatmeal cereals Friday because of potential clumping of the baby food, which can pose a choking hazard.

Gerber said it has received complaints of choking but no reports of injury.

Fast Fact

The organic rice cereal UPC code is 15000 12504 and the organic oatmeal cereal UPC code is 15000 12502.

The company said a "limited quantity" of the cereals could contain lumps that do not dissolve in water or milk. The cereals were distributed nationwide and to Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

Food and Drug Administration compliance officer Sandra Williams said the agency was aware of the voluntary recall "and we concur."

2. I buy California organics because they have the most stringent laws as far as I know
Concerning China, I think we need to have laws passed re 'Point of Origin.' Point of Origin NEEDS to be included in ALL labels, always, no exceptions.

3. WTf is in the *non-dissolvable lumps*?
I know a bad joke could be inserted here, but jeez! Can they be a wee bit more open on the problem?

We do a thin mix anyways, but we'll have to try the other organic brand again.

9. I fed Baby a bowl of the non-organic Gerber's rice
...mixed with formula this week. After half an hour he started fussing and kicking, and then threw it all up. Hmmmmm. Wonder if I oughta report that. It was unlike him.

12. Do you think it could also be the iron content in baby cereal?
Maybe your little sweetie is meeting a threshold for tolerance?

11. Let me guess, it's made in China and the secret clumping ingredient is bentonite
aka Clumping CAT LITTER.

14. Agreed.
My cream of wheat (or rice) used to lump up, and the response is to pay attention and squash the lumps.

It's what my grandfolks did for my parents, what they did for me, and what I did for our tyke.

"Excuse me, but I want my life perfect, organic, and in a box. It must be drip-dry, no-iron, and without any lumps or mess. Or inconvenience. Oh, and I want it delivered by 9 am Monday, and send somebody along to set it up for me."

15. I actually like the lumps in the cream of wheat
however it would never be edible for a child..

When my children were babes...I would add more milk to the cereal and squash the lumps...sometimes the directions are just a guide ...sometimes you need more liquid in the cereal.
