Edwards Increases His Money in the Bank
Source: Associated Press

By JIM KUHNHENN

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democrat John Edwards increased his cash on hand this quarter despite a drop in contributions for his presidential nomination campaign, according to financial reports he was to file Sunday.

In a preview of his filing, the Edwards campaign reported $12 million in the bank for the primary elections, an increase of more than $2 million over his cash on hand at the end of March.

Edwards, the former senator from North Carolina and 2004 vice presidential nominee, raised about $8.8 million for the primary from April through June; he also raised $250,000 for the general election, money he can't use unless he becomes the Democratic nominee. The campaign planned to file its detailed report with the Federal Election Commission later Sunday.

Overall, Edwards has raised $21.8 million for the primary and $1.3 million for the general election. His totals trail those of the presidential field's money leaders, Democratic Sens. Barack Obama of Illinois and Hillary Clinton of New York. But his cash on hand places him firmly in third place in overall finances among Democrats, ahead of New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut.

1. He's managing his budget
Pretty well. I'm glad to hear he's meeting some targets and being realistic about needs to be for primaries vs general election. It's good to know where his focus is at present.

2. I'm Glad To Hear This
I was really worried when I heard about Senator McCain's financial woes, because it seemed McCain had more than Senator Edwards.

I suppose it just goes to show, Democrats know how to manage money - Republicans don't.

4. I saw a recent clip of Elizabeth Edwards. She looks as if she is losing
her hair as well as her eyebrows. I worry that she is pushing herself too hard. I wish she would take time to rest and be with her children.

5. "Every person should get to choose the way they want to die"
That's what a character in a BBC drama said to a daughter whose mother was acting as though every thing was OK even though the mother had terminal cancer. I saw this drama a number of years ago and that line has stayed with me. In the drama, the daughter finally accepted the wisdom of those words. Because,of course, we will all die one day. And when we do, we don't want someone else telling us how to leave this world.
