Pace: Another Troop Buildup Possible
Source: AP)

BAGHDAD (AP) - The U.S. military's top general said Monday that the Joint Chiefs of Staff is weighing a range of possible new directions in Iraq, including, if President Bush deems it necessary, an even bigger troop buildup.

Making no predictions, Marine Gen. Peter Pace revealed that he and the chiefs of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force are obliged to consider various troop-level scenarios before September, when Bush will receive an assessment of the Iraq situation from his top commander there, Gen. David Petraeus.

"We're (doing) the kind of thinking that we need to do and be prepared for whatever it's going to look like two months from now," he said in an interview with two reporters traveling overnight with him from Washington aboard an Air Force C-17 cargo jet.

"That way, if we need to plus up or come down" in numbers of troops in Iraq, then the details will have been studied and the military services will be in position to carry out whatever policy Bush chooses, Pace said.

3. Pace and the rest of the Bush crime family need to be arrested...
and charged with ignoring reality. I'm dead serious.

They don't care about the wishes of the people AT ALL. They don't even hear us.

5. Pace is just Rummy's spokeman at this point
he has been tasked with throwing this out so they can test on it and so it doesn't appear to be coming out of the clear blue sky when it is brought up again.

6. They are already setting it up. More troops will be needed in September.
Bush will veto anything Congress sends to him that draws down troop levels or provides for a date certain to start removing them.

We need a Congress now with a spine who will stand up to Bush and tell him NO. And I'm afraid we don't have that.

17. I think September is D-Day ...
Edited on Mon Jul-16-07 11:55 AM by BearSquirrel2
I think in September Democrats will make their stand. Republicans are defecting and the public in increasingly sour over the war. Consider this some "I told you so" time.

Just remember until they can get 20 Republican Senators on board, the Democrats only real choice is to shut down the government. They don't have to send Bush spending bills. However, Bush doesn't have to sign general funding bills. I could see Bush systematically shutting down every program he does not like and putting the $$$ it into Iraq. He has ample precedent of "not spending" budgeted funds and not being seriously challenged on it.

8. So, Bush is back to being the decider? Gee, that didn't take long:
July 10:

Bush: ‘Military people’ will decide troop levels
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19691238/

Today:
"The U.S. military top general said Monday that the Joint Chiefs of Staff is weighing a range of possible new directions in Iraq, including, if President Bush deems it necessary, an even bigger troop buildup."

What a difference a week makes.

37. Just an FYI
from an active duty soldier

The end strength active duty ground forces are

512,000 for the Army

199,000 for the Marine Corps

That is 711,000 troops available, not counting the 500,000 in the Army National guard and Reserves and the 30,000 Marine corps reserves.......

Working with that 711,000 Active Duty ground troops number and with 160,000 in Iraq they are quite confident they can add a lot more troops........hell take off the 105,000 from the last rotation that just got home and they still have another 350,000 troops they could throw into Iraq without having to touch the reserves or National Guard.........

Just an FYI.............

26. Anyone notice the finger pointing here?
The U.S. military's top general said Monday that the Joint Chiefs of Staff is weighing a range of possible new directions in Iraq, including, if President Bush deems it necessary, an even bigger troop buildup.

Bush always claims its the generals telling him what to do, even though he is commander in chief.

Now Pace is saying Bush is telling him what to do.

This war has no one who will claim responsibility

27. Pace: US Weighs Larger 'Surge' in Iraq
Source: AP

BAGHDAD (AP) - The U.S. military is weighing new directions in Iraq, including an even bigger troop buildup if President Bush thinks his "surge" strategy needs a further boost, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Monday.

Marine Gen. Peter Pace revealed that he and the chiefs of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force are developing their own assessment of the situation in Iraq, to be presented to Bush in September. That will be separate from the highly anticipated report to Congress that month by Gen. David Petraeus, the top commander for Iraq.

The Joint Chiefs are considering a range of actions, including another troop buildup, Pace said without making any predictions. He called it prudent planning to enable the services to be ready for Bush's decision.

The military must "be prepared for whatever it's going to look like two months from now," Pace said in an interview with two reporters traveling with him to Iraq from Washington.
