POUGHKEEPSIE, New York (AP) -- Jerry Hadley, the world-class tenor known for his agile and lyric voice, died Wednesday, a week after he shot himself in an apparent suicide attempt. Jerry Hadley sang lead in Paul McCartney's "Liverpool Oratorio," among many other works.

The 55-year-old singer died two days after doctors at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie took him off life support, said family friend and spokeswoman Celia Novo.

Hadley, who had been battling personal problems, shot himself with an air rifle July 10 at his home in Clinton Corners, 80 miles north of New York City. State police said he was found unconscious on his bedroom floor.

The Illinois-born Hadley sang everything from Mozart to show tunes, including appearing on a recording of "Show Boat" that was a best-seller.

So sad. A gorgeous man with a gorgeous voice. He will be missed in the popular and the operatic worlds both. I'm stunned. I saw him on TV in the early 90s singing with Sam Ramey (bass-baritone) and Thomas Hanmpson(Baritone).

2. How do you kill yourself with an air rifle?
Unless you hit yourself over the head with it? RIP, dude.

5. You and the previous poster are specifically thinking of pellet guns...
but while all pellet guns are air rifles, not all air rifles fire pellets. In fact, air rifles are commonly available that fire low-caliber bullets, especially the .22.

6. sad
His album called "Golden Days" with Tony is a lovely, lovely tribute to American song. A voice so beautiful it brought me tears.

9. Oh, that's sad.
He had such a lovely voice...esp. in Mozart when he just floated so effortlessly.
