House Retains Public Broadcasting Funds
Source: Associated Press

The House Wednesday evening overwhelmingly rejected President Bush's plan to eliminate the $420 million federal subsidy for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

The 357-72 vote demonstrated the enduring political strength of public broadcasting. The outcome was never in doubt, unlike a fight two years ago when Republicans tried but failed to slash public broadcasting subsidies.

The move to kill subsidies for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which make up about 15 percent of its budget, was launched by Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colo.

"Taxpayers are being asked to pay more in taxes because Congress is not willing to make hard choices and balance our spending with our income," Lamborn said.

2. "Taxpayers are being asked to pay more in taxes" for PBS?

It's $1.25 per person, idiot. If you want, I'll pay your share of PBS this year. Where do I send the money?

But no "Antiques Roadshow" for you if I do!

I know about that twit from Colorado -- but who were the others? They need to be publicly outed.

5. agreed...
and 125 of us can get together to send each one of the losers 1 penny to cover their cost for pbs (1.25 total), since they dont want to pay that while paying thousands for war and corporate welfare. in addition, if we all pay with credit cards, they will actually lose money. it's a win-win for everyone involved!

6. The Republicanites have been trying to kill PBS for years
It was part of the Contract on America back in 1994. The fact that a partly tax-funded medium actually shows the occasional left-of-center program frosts them. As you know, most of the programming is pretty non-partisan (Masterpiece Theater, Antiques Roadshow), but the existence of even the slightest hint of left-of-center content sends the wingnuts into a frenzy. Bill Moyers! Wide Angle! P.O.V.! Frontline! Grrr.

Never mind The Nightly Business Report or Charlie Rose's preference for interviewing right-leaning Establishment types, especially with regard to foreign policy.
