CBS2 Exclusive: Feds Seize Rocket Launcher In N.J.
BREAKING NEWS:

Scott Weinberger
Reporting

(CBS) JERSEY CITY A Jersey City woman made a shocking discovery on her lawn this morning when she noticed a military rocket launcher lying in the grass.

Niranjana Besai was leaving her house at 88 Nelson Street, to go to work at just after 8 a.m. when she saw the launcher on her front lawn. She immediately called police.

Besai's neighbor, Joe Quinn, saw her pointing at the equipment from her front porch. When he walked over to the six-foot-long weapon, he was just as shocked. “It looked like a bazooka,” he told CBS 2 News.

Quinn tells CBS 2 HD he originally thought the launcher was just a pipe, but after noticing it had a picture of a soldier on it, he realized it looked similar to a missile launcher he'd seen on television.

25. The old LAW anti-tank Rocket had instructions with PICTURES
So I am thinking it is an LAw Rocket (Or just the tube). The LAW was a one shot Rocket launcher that was to be tossed away whenever the Rocket was fired. The Russians made a copy of it.

The issue is this "Rocket" just the tube (Which you can buy on line, or use to the last time I looked) or the tube WITH A ROCKET (Which you can NOT BUY legally anywhere)? If it is the later (Rocket and tube) it is a clear danger sign, if it is the former (Just the Tube) a mere scare tactic (i.e. put an empty tube near a runway and watch Security go nuts).

More on the LAW:

56. Most item in vietnam came with a comic with a well drawn blond
The comic was to keep the soldier's attention, well some instruction was taught in the comic. It was (and is) effective, through when I was in in the 1980s she was drawn with full BDUs not the skimpy dress she had on in the 1960s.

Anyway, my point was DRAWING ON THE WEAPON, not the instructions. That is what was REPORTED on whatever was seen. Even claymores had writing saying "This side to Enemy"m but these were more reminders than instructions.

28. there's an illustration on the tube warning the operator about the back-blast
if you stand in a 60 degree cone behind the launcher when it's fired you'll get injured by the blast of the rocket as it exits the launcher.

Just because someone posts an article does not mean they believe it's details.. I posted this same story this morning.. Just find it odd.. and why was it on CNN and not Faux? Very unusual..

Trust me, I don't buy the terra terra bullshit any more than any of you do.

19. What scaremongering reporting
1st, an AT-4 is an UNGUIDED anti-tank ROCKET that is wholly ineffective at shooting down airplanes. That dosent stop CBS from using stock footage of Afganis shooting GUIDED anti-aircraft MISSLES.

2nd, there do exist dummy AT-4 tubes that are used during training. They simulate the weight and bulk of the weapon without the ability to actualy shoot a rocket. These are not unkown to make their way into civilian hands. As they are not actually rocket lanchers, the only thing they can do is look scary.

26. The tubes are common enough that people make "toy" launchers out of them
http://www.arniesairsoft.co.uk/projects/at4_custom/at4_custom.htm

I think one of the major difference that set this one aside from other (former) airsoft AT-4 is the fact that it being 100% authentic, both in appearance and control. It looks identical to the army's AT-4 because it is built on a de-milled AT-4 tube. It uses 100% of the original switches and buttons and even safety of the military's AT-4. It is also a fully mechanical design which does not require any power source to fire (nothing to fail you).

Besides the weight (or if someone is dumb enough to look directly down the tube), there is no way you can tell this is not the real deal. For example Florida Airsoft has their own version built earlier this year using an electronic sprinkler valve. However to accommodate the valve, a hole has to be cut in the AT-4 and they have to build a small box to cover the sprinkler valve that sticks out of the AT-4 tube.

46. From the article
Sources tell CBS 2 HD that the device is an AT-4 missile launcher that is used to fire against tanks and buildings. The device was first approved by the U.S. Army in 1985 and its very powerful warheads can penetrate through more than a foot of armor.

Each launcher can be used only once, however, and the device found on Besai's lawn was said to have been used previously. It was deemed inoperable and turned over U.S. Army officials at the New Jersey's Fort Monmouth.

31. Feds Seize Missile Launcher In Jersey City
Source: CBS

(CBS) JERSEY CITY A Jersey City woman made a shocking discovery on her lawn this morning when she noticed a military rocket launcher lying in the grass.

Niranjana Besai was leaving her house, located at 88 Nelson Street, to go to work just after 8 this morning when she spotted the launcher on her front lawn. "I read it and it (said) 'missile,'" Besai told CBS 2 HD. "There was little 'missile' (writing) on it."

She immediately called police.

Sources tell CBS 2 HD that the device is an AT-4 missile launcher that is used to fire against tanks and buildings. The device was first approved by the U.S. Army in 1985 and questions are being raised as to whether the device was stolen from a branch of the military.

...

Officials initially expressed concern after discovering that Besai's house is located along a flight path for Newark Liberty International Airport.

The rocket launcher has morphed into an anti-tank bazooka type weapon. These things appear to be widely available (US$1,480.64 according to wiki). One has to ask 'why would somebody leave it on somebody's lawn?'

"It can never be reloaded, but it still has the mechanism that can be useful for training," Rider said, explaining that soldiers can learn to carry it on their shoulder and take aim.

I dunno. If I found one on my front lawn, I'd probably call police. And maybe the local CBC station, which just might think it a newsworthy story.

I found a car on my front lawn once, crashed into my porch. It was 2 a.m., and I was getting home from work. I called police. They arrived at my door and sternly inquired whether that was my car crashed into my porch. At least Ms. Besai seems to have avoided stupid questions like that.

The car on my front lawn turned out to belong to a drunk on the next block over who had apparently decided it was better to go home to bed than wait for someone to notice. I wonder who will turn out to be the owner of the anti-tank missile launcher found on Ms. Besai's lawn, and why s/he thought it better to leave it there than take it home. Maybe it fell like a lawn dart from the sky.

59. Who made any issue of her calling the police?
Instead of reacting to Terrah Terrah Terrah initial media reports that are short on facts and long on worst case scenario speculation, some actual facts are useful.

If I found a spent rocket launcher on my lawn I'd call police too.

It was the initial media reports focusing on non-existent ability of the empty launcher tube to shoot down airplanes that I had a problem with.

If you haven't noticed, but down here we have a problem with elected officials and their political apointments pushing fear and terror on the population, and the media being accessory to those actions doesn't help any.

But i guess we could fuel Chertoff's "gut feeling" about an imment terrah attack by thinking this incident is some sign of a future calamity or make links that don't exist to terrorists shooting down planes at Liberty International. Especially since the launcher was found in the middle of one of the most densely population cites in New Jersey with a large immigrant Muslim population.
