Sununu Wouldn't Campaign With Bush `In This Climate' Nicholas Johnston

July 20 (Bloomberg) -- New Hampshire Senator John Sununu said he wouldn't campaign with George W. Bush next year ``in this climate'' because of the president's low job-approval ratings.

Sununu, a Republican facing a tough re-election, said ``the president's popularity, unfortunately, is at a fairly low level.'' He spoke in an interview with Bloomberg Television's ``Political Capital with Al Hunt,'' scheduled to air today.

Bush campaigned for Sununu in New Hampshire twice during the 2002 election, when Sununu beat Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, a former governor, by about 20,000 votes. Shaheen, who hasn't declared her candidacy, led Sununu 56 percent to 34 percent in a Concord Monitor poll of likely voters conducted this month.

Bush's help for Sununu included one visit three days before the election. First Lady Laura Bush visited the state two days before the Nov. 5, 2002, contest. Sununu said his support for Bush's Iraq policies won't hurt his re-election bid. Opposition to the war helped unseat both of New Hampshire's Republican members of Congress in last year's election.

9. I don't think NH voters will fall for this false and pointless distancing act
Sununu Jr. is and has been an absolute Bush rubber stamper and lap dog - - his constituents won't be fooled this time around.

3. Coward
Since he votes with Bush 95% of the time, he ought to be willing to campaign with him, all up and down the state. BUsh and Sununu, Sununu and Bush. In front of all the cameras for everyone to see.

But now I suppose he's going to remake and reinvent himself as "New Hampshire's independent voice" in the Senate.

6. I wouldn't either were I were Sununu Jr.
Bush Jr. in the most obnoxious way (what a surprise!) fired his father b/c Bush Sr. lacked the balls to do it himself in a professional, tactful, and classy way. You think Jr. forgot that?

8. This interview gives Ms Shaheen a perfect campaign commercial:
Sununu won't campaign with Bush in this political climate...I won't campaign with him EVER!

11. There are essentially two kinds of Republicans..
The first kind are so blindly loyal that they would march over the cliff with the leader (sadly forcing the rest of us to do so with them).

The second kind use their popular colleagues to score opportunity points until it gets embarrassing to do so anymore.

Either way they never wake up to the fact that being a Republican is an unhealthy thing, slowly whittling away their soul and their ethics. You lay down with dogs...and get up with fleas, after all.

12. I email my 2 senators, Gregg and Sununu, rather frequently,
always thanking them for what they do to get Democrats elected. Sununu should get himself a Plan B, because he hasn't got a prayer in the next election.

13. I got a bumper sticker at the Obama rally yesterday...
It says "Senator Sununu: END THIS WAR" I hope he takes it to heart. He's in a losing battle right now; I only hope it keeps up. If he hopes to have any chance at another term in the senate, he'll have to vote with the Dems on this one.

17. If things stay the same, he will be defeated
I live in Manchester, and I've never seen such a political turnaround in this state. Unless Sununu "sees the light" and sees it fast, he's a goner. Jeanne Shaheen is a former governor and quite popular with Granite Staters.

15. Sununu: Bush Not Welcome in NH
July 20, 2007 2:42 PM
~snip~ Sununu won a narrow election to his first Senate term in 2002 over Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, and a late visit by the president was credited in some circles with helping him to victory. ~snip~

For the amazing sum of $35/plate.

Republicans apparently are a dime a dozen this season.

18. GO NH!
I escaped in 1996, before the turnaround. (Hate to think that had anything to do with it). Now I'm in Michigan, and the GOP rednecks are going down! It finally is morning in America--may our 30 year long national nightmare be drawing to a close!
