Gonzales to Senate: I'm Staying
Source: AP

WASHINGTON -

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales says he's staying at the Justice Department to try to repair its broken image, telling Congress in a statement released Monday he's troubled that politics may have played a part in hiring career federal prosecutors.

The attorney general's comments came in 26 pages of prepared testimony that was released on the eve of his scheduled appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee. He is expected to face detailed questions Tuesday about the firings and conflicts between his earlier statements and the testimony of a former aide.

After months of critics calling for his resignation, Gonzales appears to have weathered the political furor that began with the firings of eight U.S. attorneys last year and subsequently revealed a Justice Department hiring process that favored Republican loyalists.

In his written testimony, Gonzales touted the department's focus on terrorists, violent crime and even aid to the 2005 Hurricane Katrina victims. He made no reference to the fired U.S. attorneys and only briefly mentioned the controversy that has torpedoed morale at the Justice Department and has called the fairness of its attorneys' into question.

10. Wow
I've known for years now that things are rotten in denmark but this morning I just thought about how far things have gone where the Attorney General can openly admit to commiting crimes against the people and keep his job.

His only platitude is to say that he'll work on his departments' image... as if to say "Hey, we've been corrupt and fucked up for years now... it's only a problem when you make us mildly uncomfortable by bringing our scams out into the light. But don't worry you'll forget all about this soon. Go eat a cheeseburger or some cake or something."

19. And people wonder why I get so disillusioned with our new congress...
Yeah, our one issue congress, won't impeach, won't hold anyone to task, they just get all puffed up, wag a finger now and then, condemn and berate, but god help us if they actually follow through on something.

They are on a mission to get us out of Iraq, that's wonderful, but one would think that they are also capable to doing more than one thing at a time. I guess I was wrong.

And this is what the repukes see happening and they take full advantage of it.

the dems are bringing a knife to a gun fight.

once they finally realize that playing nice with these morons is what is getting us in to trouble, it will be way to late.

the problem with the constitution is: people believe that our "elected*" officials have to follow it. the repukes have proved to us that is such pre-9/11 thinking.

26. Oh I know that. but as long as the repukes keep the rhetoric up on it
that will be the all encompassing issue to prevent the dems from starting impeachment hearings.

I want out of Iraq now, but the way all this is going down, it reads a like play out of the repuke text book.

25. He's scared and trying to rally what he thinks are his troops.
"Mommy, I know I've been a bad boy, but I promise I'll stop. I'll be really good from now on. Just don't take away my toys."

We shall see what he does when Congress sends impeachment actions to the D.C. U.S. Attorney. That will be the test. Failure to prosecute for contempt of Congress at the request of Congress would most likely amount to further politicization of the Justice Department and could be sold grounds for Gonzales' impeachment -- especially since he has not corrected the testimony in which he lied.

30. Gonzales Vows to Fix Justice's Image
Source: Associated Press

By LARA JAKES JORDAN

WASHINGTON (AP) - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales says he's staying at the Justice Department to try to repair its broken image, telling Congress in a statement released Monday he's troubled that politics may have played a part in hiring career federal prosecutors.

Senators already skeptical of Gonzales' ability to lead the department were preparing to hammer him about the firings of eight U.S. attorneys and conflicts between his earlier statements and the testimony of a former aide.

The attorney general's comments were included in 26 pages of prepared testimony released on the eve of his scheduled appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee. The hearing comes during an escalating executive-privilege standoff with the White House over the firings.

Across the Capitol, the House Judiciary Committee was readying votes on contempt citations for White House chief of staff Josh Bolten and former presidential counsel Harriet Miers for disregarding subpoenas to testify and provide documents on the firings. The White House has said that any such materials are covered by executive privilege and that the president's current and former immediate advisers are immune from congressional subpoenas.

39. Typical neocon response, They are unable to see that they themselves are the problem
Their hypocrisy blinds them to the fact that they are miserable failures. The chimp in chief thinks that he was picked by guhAWduh to do the job. And since his guhAWduh can not make mistakes, all of the things that normally would appear to be horrible fuckups to any sane individual must have some purpose. The purpose might not be evident and is certainly not to be questioned and brings the comforting thoughts that the mistakes is not his. Hopefully, his next "vision" or whatever tells him to make a leap of faith from the White House roof after ordering Darth incarcerated.
