President Bush's Polyps Benign
Source: ABC News

ABC News' Martha Raddatz reports: Five small polyps, or growths removed from President Bush's colon were benign, or non-cancerous, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow told reporters Monday.

"The president is in good health, there's no reason for alarm," said Snow, who himself beat colon cancer but was diagnosed in March with a reoccurrence of cancer that has attached to his liver.

Snow said the President will have a follow-up colonoscopy in three years, rather than waiting the usual five years, because polyps were discovered.

3. Would we really know if they were cancerous?
We can't depend on this government to EVER tell us the truth about anything. They have a clear track record that indicates they practice deception at every opportunity.

So, we really don't know. If they were cancerous, we'd never know it. And that's the truth.

5. Sounds fishy to me
We had the test last year. No polyps, see you in ten years. Benign polyps, same deal - see you in ten years.

The only people I know who ever needed to come back before that were those who had the type of polyp that could become malignant.

I'm ready to go back before ten years even though they found no polyps. But the specialist didn't suggest it.

I could be wrong. But I still think something is fishy.

13. I've had 3 so far
Had one in Jan. and they took out 3 polyps. Have had 5 taken before. I am to go back in 3 years but thats because our family has a history of this cancer. It took my mother. So if there is no history in your family and no polyps thats probably why the 10 year cycle.

15. My grandfather died of colon cancer
And my dad had benign polyps. I had none last year. Hubby had a few that never turn into cancer. We both were advised to return in ten years.

But we're likely to return in five years even if we have to pay for the procedures ourselves.

Good luck with your testing in the future! You sure are doing the right thing. It makes me so sad when friends say they're too squeamish to get it done.

17. FWIR, he's had some polyps removed before..
and I agree, they must have been of enough concern for them to recheck him at regular intervals. I think he had the previous polyps removed, went back three years later, and had no polyps, but they told him to come back in five years anyway. Those polyps 8 years ago must have given them some concern, and like you I wonder what the real deal was with these.

At any rate, he's a lucky bastard because a) he's got free health care and b) even if he didn't he's wealthy enough to afford the tests anyway.

24. That's what I recall
I figure that those earlier polyps may have been the type that could become malignant but were still benign. Thus, the more frequent testing.

48. No, that's the standard recomendation if there are no polyps at all
and no family history - though your age may also determine how often you have one. I have a friend who hasn't had a polyp (yet), but does have a strong family history, her doctor suggested every 5 years for her in her 40s and 50s and now that she's in her 60s he's saying every 3 years.

And bless another son of Scottish descent. I live in Georgia near the town of Franklin North Carolina. That part of the Tar Heel State just has oodles and gobs of sons and daughters of Scotland. Western NC is mountainous and beautiful. They say it favors the Highlands. Wouldn't know myself. But, I highly recommend it as a place to visit if you ain't been. Scottish Tartans Museum is in Franklin NC. Small, but nice.
