Cheney once considered vice presidency "cruddy job"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Dick Cheney once considered the vice presidency a "cruddy job" but got over his misgivings and went on to be arguably the most powerful No. 2 in U.S. politics, and one of the most heavily criticized.

The 66-year-old Cheney's stoic, no-nonsense demeanor and influence in many White House decisions are in stark contrast to his youthful days when he was caught twice for drunk driving in Wyoming and dropped out of Yale University for bad grades.

Cheney's life has been chronicled in a fairly sympathetic biography by Stephen Hayes, a writer for The Weekly Standard conservative magazine. He spent nearly 30 hours in one-on-one interviews with the normally reticent Cheney for the book.

In his research Hayes found that Cheney in 1996 called the vice presidency a "cruddy job," which his political mentor, President Gerald Ford, had hated. But by 2000 Cheney was persuaded to accept when George W. Bush offered the position.

His "youthful days" huh? Drunk driving and bad grades seem pretty much on par with his old age activities like shooting people in the face and illegal administrative activities. Not that anyone seems to care - they just let him keep on raking in the war profits...

2. That was before he imagined being puppet master to a buffoon
and controlling everything himself. He talked his way into this job knowing full well how it was gonna work out. All he had to do was pump up the fragile ego of the pathetic simpleton bush and he could get the moran to do whatever he wanted.

He's done exactly what he set out to do. Bush actually thinks he's in charge while practically nobody else in the world does.

I wouldn't think a gig like that was a cruddy job either.

3. Cheney wasn't the shooter, it was Pamela Williford (Ambassador to Switzerland).

That is why - in direct violation of Texas law - they waited so long to announce the incident. They had to get her out of the country.

They were drunk as skunks.

I heard this directly from a spouse of someone on the scene.

5. You can take it to the bank.
I have known this since right after the incident, but was sworn to secrecy.

To not post this right away was very difficult.

But lately I have felt like I should just say "screw it" and do it anyway.

So I hid it here for starters.

6. no wonder -- he's DOING a cruddy job ...
A bit of projection there, I think?

Yet another example of why it's a bad idea to put someone who hates government in charge of governing.

9. Cactus Jack was right about what this V.P. is worth a bucket of #hit
The papers of the day said the 2 time v.p. of pres. Roosevelt said Spit, but I wonder... I understand his feeling of uselessness. I think that even he would agree it's a better choice than the two headed snake we have now.

12. He persuaded himself to be VP
He wasn't supposed to be the candidate. He was supposed to be picking the VP candidate and found all the others lacking, so he chose himself.

Really, this is such a well-known story, where does this "had to be persuaded" crap come from?
