Sheehan arrested in impeachment protest
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan was arrested Monday at the Capitol for disorderly conduct, shortly after saying she would run against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over the California Democrat's refusal to try to impeach President Bush.

Sheehan was taken into custody inside Rep. John Conyers' office, where she had spent an hour imploring him to launch impeachment proceedings against Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. Conyers, D-Mich., chairs the House Judiciary Committee, where any impeachment effort would have to begin.

"The Democrats will not hold this administration accountable, so we have to hold the Democrats accountable," Sheehan said outside of Conyers' office after the meeting. "And I for one am going to step up to the plate and run against Nancy Pelosi."

Sheehan and about 200 other protesters had walked to Conyers' office from Arlington National Cemetery. She said Conyers told her there weren't enough votes for impeachment to move forward on the issue.

Forty-five of Sheehan's fellow protesters also were arrested.

1. don't tell me there aren't enough votes in the Judiciary Committee
What will Conyers do when Bush gives him the bird over subpeonas? You know that is coming. Is it roll over and play dead? Then we have lost our country.

for weeks before getting thrown out? not that I have A SHRED of respect for that creep - but yes, we need to know who ordered the arrest.

7. Enough votes means a simple majorit and we HAVE that!
The political bozos who represent us keep saying that there's "not enough votes for impeachment" which is a lie.

There may not be enough votes in the Senate to convict and remove Bush/Cheney, but there are MORE than enough votes in the House to vote Articles of Impeachment. All it takes is a simple majority, which is all the Repukes had when they voted impeachment for Clinton. The only thing stopping Democrats from doing exactly what the Republicans did is that Democrats don't have the balls that Republicans do.

Everybody including Strom Thurmond knew that the Senate would never get the "two turds" necessary to convict Clinton, but that did not stop the Repukes from putting the country through the impeachment ordeal. They didn't care whether they removed Clinton or not, they just wanted to embarrass him.

The only difference in this case is that we aren't merely wanting to embarrass Bush, we want to get him out of there for the salvation of the nation and for the return to Democracy and the Rule of Law. This president really HAS committed high crimes and misdemeanors. But, apparently, Democrats don't care as much about punishing treason as Republicans do about punishing unauthorized BJs.

8. Go Cindy Go!
We need more people like her to challenge the democratic wimps. I agree with her that impeachment is their constitutional duty. Bush and Cheney are turning our republic into a dictatorship and they sit on the sidelines. If the DEMs really want to end the war then impeach the thugs!

BTW, I am in Waxman's district and he is not going to take my vote for granted any more.

25. Quoting Cindy:
Quoting Cindy:

"Today we will march from Arlington Cemetery whereabsolutely no desecration is planned by our group, butwhere desecration has been committed on a daily basisby the neocon war mongers who use our troops unwisely, illegally, immorally and for monetary and politicalexpediency. When we arrive at Congressman John Conyer's (D-Mi,Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee) officetoday we will arrive with over one million signatureson petitions to impeach George Bush and Dick Cheney. We will arrive with the sentiments of the majority ofAmericans on our side. We will arrive with a thirstfor justice and armed with the truth and compassionfor our children serving in Iraq and our brothers andsisters who have had to suffer there under thecorporate greed of US war profiteers. The other day in San Diego, Rep. Conyers told anaudience that he would go forward with impeachment if3 other members joined him, well he has 15 othermembers already signed on H(Res) 333 which is Articlesof Impeachment for Dastardly Dick introduced by Rep.Dennis Kucinich. Both Rep. Conyers and Speaker Pelosineed to be reminded of what their constitutionalduties are and must be forced to act now before it istoo late. I wonder how many more of our troops andIraqis they are willing to sacrifice on the altar ofpartisan politics?"

You really take issue with her actions? She's putting herself out there at every turn, which is more than most of us can say. And I don't imagine that Conyers, who obviously would like to impeach, minded her demonstrating in his office!

politics."

Unless there's an extra Senate laying around you'd only be able to conduct one impeachment trial at time, leaving whoever's left standing in a position to name their successor.

I don't think Jeb Bush, or Condi Rice are going to immediately start bringing troops home.

That includes Pelosi and Conyers. While I don't agree with everything Cindy Sheehan says, I want to hear what she has to say. And after all, she's in favor of impeaching Bush and ending the Iraq war and her criticism of Democrats is that they are not living up to what the People want them to do. I want to hear that and not censor that. Personally, I love Nancy Pelosi, but I don't think she's totally immune from criticism just because she's Nancy Pelosi. And Cindy Sheehan's criticism is coming from a progressive viewpoint.

13. Conyers is working his butt off for impeachment.
He's the one doing much of the investigating and has introduced articles to impeach and is fighting for us. Why sit in his office? I'd stake out Pelosi's personally, since she's the leader who said impeachment was off the table.

She has given up so much for this movement. Bush Inc needs to be held responsible for the phony war on terra.

Impeachment is the only solution. If Cindy wasn't shouting it day and night, who would?

29. Democrats benefit from having a left opposition.
I see no problem in this for Democrats, and much benefit for progressives generally. She is raising the popular demand to use all legal tools to render the Bush administration politically impotent. This strengthens the hand of Democrats to actually do so.

38. I admire Sheehan
She went from a military mom who only understood the death of her son

to someone who understands a lot about global politics (which is always enough to break your heart)

and she's still at the forefront of peace in U.S.

The rest of us are just bystanders
which is what the powers-that-are are betting on.

Sometimes you have to lose to understand loss.
