Car bomb in Iraq's Hilla kills 22 - police
24 Jul 2007 06:07:50 GMT

BAGHDAD, July 24 (Reuters) - A suicide car bomb killed
22 people and wounded 66 in a crowded market in the Iraqi
town of Hilla on Tuesday, police said.

Police said the market was also close to a maternity hospital
in the Shi'ite town, 100 km (60 miles) south of Baghdad.

The explosion set at least 10 cars ablaze, police said.

Tens of thousands of U.S. and Iraqi soldiers have been
engaged in a series of offensives in and around Baghdad to
try to stem car bomb attacks, which are mainly blamed on
the Sunni Islamist organisation al Qaeda in Iraq.
