Support for Initial Invasion Has Risen, Poll Shows

By MEGAN THEE

Americans’ support for the initial invasion of Iraq has risen somewhat as the White House has continued to ask the public to reserve judgment about the war until at least the fall. In a New York Times/CBS News poll conducted over the weekend, 42 percent of Americans said that looking back, taking military action in Iraq was the right thing to do, while 51 percent said the United States should have stayed out of Iraq.

But two-thirds of those polled said the United States should reduce its forces in Iraq, or remove them altogether. Support for the invasion had been at an all-time low in May, when only 35 percent of Americans said the invasion of Iraq was the right thing and 61 percent said the United States should have stayed out. The latest poll made clear that a two-thirds majority of Americans continue to say the war is going badly.

However, the number of people who say the war is going “very badly” has fallen from 45 percent earlier in July to a current reading of 35 percent, and of those who say it is going well, 29 percent now describe it as “somewhat well” compared with 23 percent just last week.

Many of those who said the invasion was correct made it clear, however, that they are no longer convinced the United States should remain there.

1. Other than the fact that Americans are some of the dumbest people in the world
Edited on Tue Jul-24-07 03:33 AM by still_one
you will also notice that there is even LESS reporting of events in Iraq than before, and it was dismal at best before

I have reconcilled the sad state of affairs, that many who voted for this administration, or didn't even bother to vote in 2000 or 2004, are being hurt the most by the policy of this administration

Flordia and Ohio, both which used to be blue went for bush, and both are suffering both economically, with record number of housing forclosures, plus lost jobs

In addition, much of the South has also been hurt badly

So the question becomes, are the issues involving gay rights, and religion in government, really that much more important to you than your children dying in Iraq, your jobs being off-shored, the cost of energy, food, and healthcare becoming unafforable?

Sorry to the rest of us who are suffering because of the brainless idiots who continue to vote against their own interest.

That is at least some consolation, that THEY are paying the price for their stupidity also

2. Oh, you're right about that......
......."Americans are some of the dumbest people in the world". :banghead: SO gullible and easily lead, it's a wonder to me that they still know how to breathe.

Consider this: commercials WORK on the average American. Think about that. Nonsensical, juvenile, mind-numbingly stupid commercials WORK on our consumer driven citizens. That should tell any thinking human being all they need to know about the mentality of the average Joe or Jane in America.

That elections can be and are stolen without the slightest trace of concern on their part is testament to their apathy and ignorance. Many would consider that statement "un-American". :eyes: Being un-American is idly standing by while your country is slowly but surely transformed into a dictatorship while you wave a small American flag made in China chanting, "support the troops". :banghead:

I remember reading a poll (can't remember where) that 90% of Americans think they are of above average intelligence. :wow: I'm constantly amazed at the abject ignorance of John Q. Public and he thinks HE'S smarter than everyone else? I weep for this fucking country.

8. Why is it then that most Americans are onto George Bush?
You don't think there are plenty of morons in every other culture in the world? I'd
hate to disappoint you, but Bush has tons of admirers in Europe. I get hate mail
from them to my OpEdNews pieces.

5. We did win in 2000
However I personally know of 10 people that voted Gore in 2000 that voted Bush in 2004........John Kerry came across as very fake and arrogant to many in the military, not to me, but he did to many people I serve with..........Personally I think we lost in 2004........

10. That's sad: A war hero gets less votes from the military than an AWOL disgrace.
Goes to show how the corporate M$M swift-boating worked it's magic.

Propagandy! Like taking candy from a baby ... damn out bought and paid for Corporate Media. :grr:

4. the comforting lull of lies that soothe
Iraq is just a case of a good idea gone wrong....

Making America right to invade...so the lies and trumped up evidence are glossed over...and America isn't the bad guy for invading...just got off on the wrong path afterwords...

snort

such people don't want freedom...they want their delusions

6. The corporate media has been doing their job I see.
The corporations are feeding Americans the government propaganda and some Americans are buying it. I wonder why we don't see the battles in Iraq on our television screens like we did in Vietnam?

I guess the war must be doing better because I don't see it on my TV.

7. Well you can see them on youtube and liveleak
As for why you don't see them on CBS or CNN??? That's easy, most journalists never leave their hotels and when they do come visit me and my guys on the FOB's they fly in, stay a few hours and get back to Baghdad in time for a beer and the nightly party at the swimming pool.............

9. The 42% who supposedly believe "the invasion was
the right thing to do" would probably tell you that Iraq was responsible for 9/11 and thus retaliation was necessary.

If whores like the NY Times and CBS News had done their jobs in the first place, that number would be much, much lower. Instead they were "catapulting the propaganda," as chimp so inelegantly puts it, misleading the sheeple with lies and distortions. If they had any integrity at all, every American would, by now, be familiar with PNAC and the neo-cons' determined march to an illegal war of choice. Instead, they conned, and continue to con, Americans into thinking this clusterfuck had something to do with a (bogus) "war on terror."

11. translation - "It was a good mistake when Bush first made it"
"But as time has passed, it has become a bad mistake".

It's like a cancer patient saying there was nothing wrong with his decision to start smoking, it was the decision to keep smoking that was the error.

13. I don't know which is worse
The evident ignorance of the people responding to the poll, or the way the questions were framed. Phrases such as "campaign against terrorism" and "war on terrorism" are totally bogus Republican phrases that get parroted by the corporate media even though they really don't make sense.
