US city issues immigrant ID card
Source: BBC

"A city in Connecticut has become the first in the United States to issue identity cards to illegal immigrants."

"New Haven - best known as the home of Yale University - is offering the cards to all its residents, including to some 12,000 undocumented immigrants."

"New Haven Mayor John DeStefano (D) said the cards, which were approved last month, would make immigrants more willing to report crime. The simple straightforward purpose here is to build a stronger community," he said. You can't police a community of people who won't talk to our cops."

"BBC Americas editor Will Grant says the controversial move stands in stark contrast to the approach towards illegal immigrants adopted in other parts of the US. New laws and proposals in more than 90 cities or counties across the country include prohibiting landlords from renting to illegal immigrants and penalising firms that employ them."

Without an effective national immigration policy, it looks like localities are taking the forefront in dealing with the problem of illegal immigration. Some are enacting harsh anti-immigrant laws, while others (well at least this one) are going with immigrant friendly legislation.

It often seems to be Democratic politicians who are taking the lead on both sides of the issue, e.g. Gov. Napolitano in Arizona and this mayor in Connecticut.

1. This is a sensible interim policy for a local government.
The undocumented immigrants are here and working. This helps regularize their existence. Hell, maybe they'll be able to get drivers' licenses and insurance.

Far better and less hateful than Sheriff Joe-style policies.

2. Sherrif Joe....
Only in Arizona, would Sheriff Joe be considered a sort of contemporary folk-hero, instead of a buffoon.

And have his own "posse." Sheriff Joe and his Posse. Every time I see him on the evening news, I have to remind myself what century I'm living in.
