More than half of Danish troops have now left Iraq

Copenhagen - More than half of the some 400-strong Danish contingent in southern Iraq have now left the country, the Danish defence forces said Thursday. Denmark began preparations for its withdrawal in June after the Iraqi government said it was prepared to take charge of security.

The withdrawal had gone faster than planned and since the contingent's mission was completed there was no need to keep them in Iraq, spokesman Jes Rasmussen told Danish broadcaster DR.

Rasmussen said it was likely most of the remaining troops would be out of Iraq next week.

Meanwhile, Denmark was set to deploy some 50 troops and four helicopters that would be used for reconnaissance flights, transports and other missions in southern Iraq until the end of the year.
