Australia drops charges over UK bomb plot-media

CANBERRA, July 27 (Reuters) - Australian authorities dropped
terrorism charges against an Indian doctor, arrested in connection
with a failed car bomb plot in Britain, Australian media reports
said on Friday.

Dr Mohamed Haneef, 27, had been charged with recklessly
supporting terrorism by providing a relative in Britain with his
mobile phone SIM card. He has been in jail since he was detained
by police on July 2 as he was about to leave Australia for India.

1. Terrorism charge dropped

All charges against Indian doctor Mohamed Haneef were dropped today in the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

Prosecutor A.J. McSporran said that there would be "no reasonable prospect of a conviction of Dr Haneef being secured".

He told the court that prosecutors had made two mistakes at a bail hearing on July 14.

One was that Dr Haneef's SIM card had been found in a burning jeep at Glasgow Airport when, in fact, it had been found in the possession of the brother of a terrorism suspect in Liverpool.

The second error was that Dr Haneef had once lived with some of the UK bombing suspects, when in fact he had not.

Magistrate Wendy Cull ruled that the charges against Dr Haneef be dismissed.

Dr Haneef was not in court. He is being held in Wolston Correctional Centre.

His fate, including whether he will be allowed to stay in Australia, or be deported, is still unknown.

Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions Damian Bugg and Australian Federal Police commissioner Mick Keelty will hold a joint press conference this afternoon.

The conference is scheduled for 3.30pm in Canberra.

The AFP :Australian Federal Police ( our version of the FBI) lied to a court in an attempt to wrongfully convict an innocent Indian doctor who was related to one the accused bombers in the UK Glasgow Airport incident.

## The AFP wrongfully claimed that Dr Haneef gave a SIM card to his relative and it was found in the burning vehicle that crashed into the airport gates-it was actually found 300 miles away.

## The AFP wrongfully claimed that Dr Haneef had lived with his cousin-one of those charged in the Glasgow incident-when they knew this was not true.

## The AFP wrongfully claimed that Dr Haneef had fled to the airport on the day of the Glasgow incident with a one-way ticket-when they knew he had gotten permission to take leave from the hospital he worked in weeks beforehand-to visit his wife and new baby in India.

Dr Hanef's defence counsel released the transcript of his questioning by AFP officers which clearly showed the prosecutor told the
court deliberate mis-truths when Haneef appeared on a charge of "recklessly " supporting a terrorist act.

Haneef had been held in solitary confinement for 3 weeks while 300 officers worked on his case.

Now he must battle the Immigration Dept who are trying to deport Dr Haneef-a completely innocent man.

This has been a major bungle and an attempt by the Howard government to convict an innocent man ahead of elections due in a few months..Heads will roll over this-it may cost the job the AFP chief Mick Keelty who has been doing the bidding of a political party.

Keelty's last controversial act was when a concerned father went to the AFP after he heard his son may be travelling to Bali to purchase drugs-and requested the AFP to talk to his son.
Instead-the AFP conspired with Indonesian police and allowed 9 young Australians to travel to Bali, purchase drugs and then arranged for their arrest. The 9 are now in a Bali jail with sentences ranging from 20 years to life-while 3 have been sentenced to death by a firing squad.

2. See, I told you. All a plot to discredit "SiCKO"

Every last one of these doctors will be exonerated because the whole thing was a fradulent conspiracy to make people terrified of "British Doctors", like the engaging young British physician shown in the movie. I knew it, I knew it, I knew it!!!

It worked, too. I truly feel it blunted the movie's impact.

But it will have played itself out by the time SiCKO gets to the DVD shelves. It will have a stronger impact then than it has had during its theatrical run.
