Food in Botulism recall still being sold
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Stores nationwide are continuing to sell recalled canned chili, stew, hash and other foods potentially contaminated with poisonous bacteria even after repeated warnings the products could kill.

The recall now covers two years' production at the company's Augusta, Ga., plant - a tally that spirals into the tens of millions of cans.

Spot checks by the Food and Drug Administration and state officials continue to turn up recalled products for sale in convenience stores, gas stations and family run groceries, from Florida to Alaska. The FDA alone has found them in roughly 250 of the more than 3,700 stores visited in nationwide checks, according to figures the agency provided to The Associated Press.

FDA investigators believe Castleberry's failed to properly cook some or all the products, allowing the Clostridium botulinum bacteria to survive the canning process. In the oxygen-free and moist environment of the sealed cans, the bacteria thrive and produce a toxin that causes botulism, a muscle-paralyzing disease.

"The longer this stuff stays in the can, the worse it gets," Acheson said.

3. And they are still selling the anti-freeze toothpaste at dollar stores too.
They found some on the shelves just a few weeks ago around here.

I hope these places are being fined for not taking recalled stuff off the shelves/

4. I don't know but I was at my sister's house in CT a couple of weeks ago and she had some!
She said that she looked and it said Colgate/Palmolive which it did. In small letters it said 'not'.

Scary shit.

5. Geeebus..............
Castleberry has been a diet staple for me for 10 years, first as a non-trad student and now as A Senior trying to survive on a $5. per hour SS income. ( with $8,000. in student loan debt.)
The good news; my local Hannaford is aware of the problem & has removed all Castleberry from the shelves!

8. I pulled Castleberry Beef Stew (with botulism) off the shelf
of the store I work at yesterday. I had pulled the chili dog sauce and chili with beans earlier in the week. I had just ordered a case of the chili dog sauce the week before. People love that stuff.

Most of the canned food products in the store where I work comes from China (all canned fruit, apple juice), Viet Nam (crab meat), Morocco (anchovies), Thailand (seafood), India (seafood), and Azerbaijan (pomegranate juice). Not to mention the dog treats hecho en Mexico. The clientele the store serves are primarily working-class poor people. I look at the shelves stocked with potential land mines and can't help but think of classicism. Allow the surplus humanity to be wiped out. "Let them eat (rancid) cake!"

I've never heard of botulism getting to the point of exploding cans.

12. It can. The Ball canning book warns of it.
Still. That's bad. It's like The Jungle all over again.
