Investigators say Watergate conspirator Magruder suffered
stroke before crashes

Published: July 27, 2007

COLUMBUS, Ohio: Watergate conspirator Jeb Stuart Magruder
suffered a stroke that apparently led to crashes with two
vehicles this week, police said Friday.

Magruder, 72, has been hospitalized since Monday, when his
car rear-ended a motorcycle, then hit a box truck about a mile
farther down an expressway that runs through Columbus, Ohio.

On Thursday police said he was cited on counts of failing to
maintain proper distance and leaving the scene of an accident.
Accident investigators concluded that Magruder had had a
stroke, police spokeswoman Amanda Ford said Friday.

Magruder has an Aug. 3 arraignment, and prosecutors intend to
proceed with their case, said Robert Levering, an assistant
city prosecutor. He said a medical condition is not generally a
legal defense by itself.

1. Charged with "...leaving the scene of an accident." --- And he had a stroke. Something does not
compute.

3. Not all strokes are debilitating - in fact, most are not.
A minor stroke could leave someone confused, but functional. I've wondered, sometimes, if I've been having mini-strokes - such as the time I was driving along, a two-lane blacktop, saw cars slowing ahead of me as one at the front was stopping to turn, cross lane, then I blinked and last car in line was 30' in front of me. 150' to 30' in a blink. Too late to do anything but stomp the brakes and rearend then.

I stopped driving for a year after that as I checked myself out for sleep apnea or other things that could cause me to fuzz out - but I couldn't afford a brain scan to see if I'd had a stroke, and a mini-stroke might not show up anyway.

So, yeah, I'd buy it.

5. I had my first mini stroke (out of about 8 for the day) at my computer. I

couldn't move for a period of time that I can't describe (less than a minute), then I walked over to the couch and fell asleep for a short while. Depending on where the stroke is and how severe, you can still fumble around. Trust me on this one.
