Edwards says fence along entire southern border "crazy"
Source: Radio Iowa News

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards says building a fence all along the southern border of the U.S. is "crazy." Edwards says there are some "isolated places" where a fence might do some good.

During a campaign appearance in Atlantic, Edwards told the crowd there are other ways to attack the problem."We should be much tougher on employers who are knowingly violating the law," Edwards said, to loud applause.

That is just perfect! Governments build walls when they are incapable of solving the problem (like Berlin and Baghdad).

2. Sheesh. . .We can't even build functional levees for NOLA
a. . .what . . .1800 mile wall is crazy and totally pointless and uninforceable as long as people have shovels and wire cutters.

As the old adage goes. . ."good neighbors don't need fences."

Investment by american businesses in Mexican businesses and massive fines for the employers are two far better remedies.

Fining immigrants 6 grand is nutz as well, given what they earn.

3. Good point about levees

Protecting ourselves and our communities near the oceans should be a priority by our government. Also taking on the insurance companies about how they dole out payments for those who lost their homes or belongings.

6. I don't see a stop in immigration unless the US economy has massive unemployment
Edited on Fri Jul-27-07 04:47 PM by TheBorealAvenger
Immigration to the US dropped greatly in the 1930s when we had "The Great Depression". There was no point coming here, no matter how weak the economic circumstances were on other continents.

7. John's right on target.
The only fence we need to build is the one around Bush, Cheney, Gonzo, Miers, Bolton, etc. Wait, we already have that one built and ready for their arrival...

Sorry, tourists.

19. It reminds me of that scene in "High Anxiety" where they're trying
to figure out how to take the morning paper off the streets of San Francisco.

"We're going to need a truck, a BIIIIIIIIG TRUCK, and lots of quarters!"

11. He may yet come to that - he's faced off against the insurance industry
before. If anybody knows the greed and avarice that is the insurance industry's guiding force, it is he. He just needs to be convinced that the American public will accept it.

14. His plan makes the slide into single payer
He realizes that going into a single payer may be a shock to the system. He wants to set it up where either private companies compete with government insurance or an individual will go into the government insurance plan if it's better. In this system, every one will eventually go into singer payer.

10. Good to see someone saying no more money for Haliburton
I'm curious as to what his point of view is about getting Mexico to start abiding by their election results...that would do more to help IMO than any wall or law enforcement.

is to stop engaging in policies that create huge disparities of wealth within and BETWEEN countries.

18. Compare to "Drug War"
In a way it is the mathematical opposite. The cheap labor junkies are few, fixed, vulnerable. They create supply and demand. The War on Drugs tries all ways and fails because the suppliers are few, well armed, outside the country and the demand is from the many. Going against the maximum number is utterly fruitless in either case, but in immigration a much larger effect is available in simply going after cheap labor junky employers. From experience it should be tempting debated and very doable.

From equal experience in massive answers against hosts of poor people is absurd, only a threat to civil liberties for ALL and a boondoggle for manipulators of fear and hate.

The real "cure" of course is to equalize economic justice on both sides of the border. Given a fair shot the Mexican poor would except lower wages at home if they were at least fair, decent, regulated and available. And being an oil producing nation the obvious question is why not?
