Edwards Dismayed by Obama-Clinton Feud
Source: Associated Press

By PHILIP ELLIOTT

DOVER, N.H. (AP) - Presidential hopeful John Edwards said the tiff between Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama is completely wrong for the Democratic Party.

"The last thing we need is two presidential candidates fighting with each other, instead of fighting for the change we need in America," Edwards said. "And, man, do we need change in the worst possible way."

Since last week's debate in South Carolina, Clinton and Obama have been arguing about how far each would go, as president, to meet with leaders of hostile nations like Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea.

On a two-day campaign swing through New Hampshire, Edwards also responded to criticism Republicans Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani have thrown at him for proposing a hike in capital gains taxes.

1. I disagree strongly - There is a substantial difference between the two foreign policies of the two
candidates. Only one of the two will change the basis of US foreign policy. And this is an important matter.

6. Only Sometimes
Edited on Sat Jul-28-07 07:33 PM by MannyGoldstein
Sometimes Mrs. Clinton is in favor of talking without preconditions. Sometimes she's not. Depends on her audience.

7. She was not the one who will change foreign policy. May be she will be more
careful in implementing it, but the premices will stay the same. I am hoping Obama will be different.

31. I agree...I think John Edwards is
way off base here and I like him.

I still do not have my candidate but I'm thinking I'll get one by the summer of 2008..for real.

2. Edwards calls a policy debate a "spat"? No wonder he's a has-been...
I'm unsure how this story from yesterday is "latest breaking news"...

11. Where do you find the word "spat"? It's not in the story
I would be surprised to hear Sen. Edwards use the word "spat". As an experienced trial lawyer, he knows how to choose his language carefully. Here is an account from ABC News, but note that the word is in the headline but not a quote from Edwards:

Clinton-Obama Spat 'Sad,' Edwards Tells ABC

"It makes me kind of sad, actually," said Edwards, speaking about the squabble to ABC News. "It's entertaining, but I don't think it's what we should be focused on right now. I think the country's faced with a war and huge challenges at home. These sort of back-and-forth personal interactions I don't think are helpful for America."

http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/Politics/story?id=2901841&page=1

Here's another version of his opinion on their differences:

Edwards’ comments came as he addressed the National Urban League presidential forum in St. Louis. Edwards spoke ahead of both Clinton and Obama.

He told the crowd, “If you’re looking for what’s wrong in Washington, why the system is broken, why the system doesn’t work, one perfect example is what’s been happening just over the course of the last four days. We’ve had two good people, Democratic candidates for president, who spent their time attacking each other instead of attacking the problems that this country’s faced.”

Hillary isn't a happy mom, Edwards? Teresa required a $10,000 bedroom makeover, Edwards?

They have a lot of gaul.

19. Lemme tell ya what sucks
I was a champion speller my entire life. I could zip through any kind of complex topic and pick out the substance without having to dwell over every sentence. I could remember my schedule, my boss' schedules, husband, kids and even my friends half the time. Multitask? I invented it.

Now I'm nearing 50. And I forget how to spell gall??

:argh:

Enjoy whatever youth you've got, believe me!!

I wasn't offended at all. I thought the mistake was funny as hell. I knew you were poking fun, I was just saying what it's like to be on my old-age end - and aren't you lucky you don't have to go through that part of aging! Not to mention that young'ns should enjoy the benefit of their full faculties while they've got them.

29. Well I missed most of the first set
For better or worse. lol.

And guess what's on. Singin' in the Rain. Do you remember when we thought the talkies were about as ancient history as covered wagons? It was only 25 years before Singin' in the Rain. I wonder how a young person really thinks about transistor radios and black and white tv? Those ancient things we had in the 60's and 70's, you know, 30 and 40 YEEEAAARRS ago.

And Peter Fonda pimping a TimeLife music collection. Have you seen THAT travesty??

*sigh*

The beat goes on.

18. Duh. Why are people surprised when someone running for president actually runs?
I'm an Edwards supporter and I think he absolutely should try to use what he can to get himself in the press. He is running for president, after all. I also don't blame Clinton and Edwards for wanting more focused debate time or Kucinich for trying to use THAT to get press.

In a perfect world, I'd like a race that focuses solely on issues. But, in the real world, I want a presidential candidate who is actually trying to win.

16. In talking about this incident in the debate one of the talking
heads on MSNBC (If I recall correctly), said "Obama is going to have problems in the general election with statements like that". I believe it was Chris Mathews who then said "Why because that is too far left", the person responded by shaking is head and saying "yes, absolutely".

How come no one EVER says about a Republican "These positions are too far right for the general populace?".

23. I think the essence of this debate is real, that there is a difference
between how Obama and Clinton would approach foreign policy. We need to discuss these differences, clarify them and decide which we prefer. Now arguing over who is best manipulating the press to appear to win the debate, that we could do without.

25. Edwards is looking for a talking point to coverage!
Obama answered the question given at a debate where you have a time limit, he answered and I understood what he meant. Clinton decided to try to make him look bad and get herself some attention and instead it has given Obama the attention he wasn't getting from the media. Now she wants it to end so Obamas coverage will shrink again and Edwards is just trying to find something that can get him more coverage, end of story! Obama defended his statement which he is allowed to do when he has been attacked, so it doesn't make sense to me for Edwards to try and make him look bad for making a stand on something during an election campaign? Anyways I like Edwards as well and would support him over Clinton any day, my opinion doesn't come from a dislike for him or anything. Its just an opinion.

27. Everyone knew exactly
what Obama's point was in his original statement and it has been twisted, spun, and contorted into some kind of gigantic disagreement on foreign policy which it isn't. If Edwards wants to chime in at this point and try to get some mileage then why not? All is fair in .............
