WASHINGTON — Nebraska Rep. Lee Terry quickly conceded that his chances of winning a fistfight against Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. would be "zero."

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Ill., demonstrates his martial arts prowess in a slide show on his campaign Web site.

That assessment was almost put to the test Tuesday night when a heated exchange between the two men threatened to turn physical.

It started when Democrat Jackson said, during a contentious floor debate, that Republicans can't be trusted.

Republican Terry responded by telling Jackson to "shut up," then walked over to add that he had found the Illinois lawmaker's comment inappropriate.

2. My rep, Lee Terry Jr., is a whiney pig. He's worthless as the day
is long. And if this armpit of a district wasn't chock full of assholes and old people, that bastard wouldn't be in Washington.

4. How horrible that must have been for Mr. Terry
Imagine someone unable to turn to violence to solve his problem! No wonder he was in such a fix that all he could do was holler like a spoiled child.

It started when Democrat Jackson said, during a contentious floor debate, that Republicans can't be trusted.

Republican Terry responded by telling Jackson to "shut up," then walked over to add that he had found the Illinois lawmaker's comment inappropriate.

Terry said Jackson let loose a profanity-filled tirade.

"I'm not going to turn with my tail between my legs," Terry said, "so I just stood there."

Then Jackson asked Terry if he'd care to step outside.

Jackson, who could not be reached for comment, is a martial arts enthusiast. Photos on his Web site show him clad in a black fighting outfit, whaling on an opponent. Terry has seen Jackson showing off his moves in the House gym and said he believes that Jackson is a black belt.

In 2006 Rep. Lee Terry appeared on the Colbert Report on one of Stephen's famous know your district.

-Colbert to Terry:

"I'm not suggesting you are a Nazi. I'm saying you support some of the Nazi's aims."

7. Colbert must have looked into Terry's eyes and saw into his
soul. Or however that works.

11. You know how this will be spun, right?
Jackson threatening Lee to a fight for no apparent reason.

Jackson is a good man - if he said such a thing to Lee, it must have been in response to something thoroughly appalling.

12. Yes , the slant was apparent from the news article
but I couldn't find another source at that time.

I still would like to see Jesse and Lee on pay-per-veiw.

21. It didn't matter how appalling it was...
Jr. let it get to him. His father had to endure that and worse all his public career and didn't flinch physically or verbally in anger (to my best recollection). Jr. is a congressman, and he needs to act professional and act on peaceful beliefs.

This is Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., from Illinois’s 2nd District, killing this dude with his hands. Jackson, who looks about 25 but is apparently 41, is a Martial Arts champion of some kind — a perfectly reasonable and probably even moral hobby for a congressman, and of no interest to us, except that he apparently threatened to kill annoying little fellow congressman Lee Terry

The dustup nearly touched off a fight between two members. Profanity flew after Jesse L. Jackson Jr., D-Ill., yelled out that Republicans “can’t be trusted.” “Shut up,” Lee Terry, R-Neb., shot back. The two squared off later, and Terry said Jackson used the F-word repeatedly and invited him to “step outside” the chamber. They didn’t, thanks in part to a third lawmaker who separated them.

20. It didn't look good on both sides
I can understand Jackson's anger when he was told to shut up. But he should have been a better person than this, but resorted to tactics a republican uses. He threatened violence. Yes, there was no call for Terry to tell him to shut up. But, Jackson should've been better than that, but instead resorted to a challenge to commit violence. This is coming from a true peacemaker's son, and if I was his father, I'd be ashamed of Jr. I am also ashamed that some of you were chearing on such a tactic. I find it disturbing that we want to end the war in Iraq, yet at the same time some of us want to start a war in our own country.
