Anti-terror chief 'misled' public

There were "serious weaknesses" in the Metropolitan Police's handling
of information after the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes, a report
has found.

Assistant Commissioner Andy Hayman "misled" the public, the Independent
Police Complaints Commission ruled.

The IPCC has examined statements issued by police after the 27-year-old
was mistakenly shot dead by officers at Stockwell Tube station on 22 July
2005.

A complaint against Met Commissioner Sir Ian Blair was not substantiated.

Mr Hayman - the UK's most senior counter terrorist-officer - was accused
of failing to tell the commissioner at the first opportunity of his
suspicions that an innocent man had been killed.

1. Hi Eugene, i've just had a quick rant about this
on the UK forum...."Sir" Ian Blair seems to have got away with his lies completely, all the blame's been passed to his deputy, and the Met now has the responsibility of what action they're going to take regarding the criminals in their own ranks....Yep, like the Liars and murderers are really going to fully prosecute the murderers as if someone was being prosecuted for murdering a policeman....whitewash and cover up comes to mind.

2. Menezes Family members giving conference now.....
Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 07:14 AM by UKProPeace
Will update as I hear what they say..

"Less than 10 days ago family members marked the 2nd anniversary of the brutal killing of Jean Charles de Menezes"

"Today's report...came about because of a complaint initiated by the family...we've only seen the report at same time as you....still trying to digest"

Harriet - Legal team "In the hours, days and weeks followed public led to believe that he was somehow connected to terrorists, he was wearing clothing which he was not wearing, and he was behaving in a certain way when he wasn't, the conference today confirms that he was not behaving in the manner which the police first reported....

"we feel there has been unnecessary delay...police have been engaging in obfusication...report completed many months ago....first in relation to Ian Blair we find inconceivable Ian Blair was not informed about mistaken shooting of innocent man....Ian Blair repeated his assertions weeks and months later.....most senior officers were talking in the afternoon that an innocent person had been shot.....home office had been informed that an innocent had been shot......even a DI in a neighbouring station had been told there had been a cock up when he had nothing to do with this...if Ian Blair really didn'ty know til the next morning, makes it equally shocking that someone in charge of Met Police did not know until then....there was either a wideranging conspiracy to cover up, or there's an absolutely shocking failure in the chain of command."

"we see again and again when police statement put out that police should say something to cover themselves such as "he failed to stop when asked", or "he was wearing a bulky jacket".....we see press releases as late as the evening that he was dressed in a way which attracted suspicion.....

"Pathologist written in his report that police account clearly untrue....very deliberate decision not to give public information......

"2 senior members of MPA key witnesses in this inquiry....can we trust decisions they make at the end of this process?"

"we need to look at why the family had to wait until report by IPCC several weeks later, the only person punished so far was the person responsible for leaking the information.."

Family member "it has taken too long for the IPCC to get to the conclusion they've finally arrived at, no one held responsible so far, no one will be prosecuted for anything, the police have been allowed to get away with murder.....huge injustice and very shameful....we are very unsatisfied with findings..."

Sorry, am going to have to leave this now...

6. This was deeply troubling and suspicious from the day it occurred.
This man seems to have been targeted by the police to be killed, and not for any of the reasons given. I hope that the British pursue this case.

8. UK police chief beats rap on killing
Source: The Age

BRITISH police have been criticised over the killing of an innocent Brazilian man following the 2005 London bombings, but the head of Scotland Yard himself escaped censure and denied he had lied.

The long-awaited report found "serious weaknesses" in police management and, in particular, said a top officer misled his boss and the public in the hours after Jean Charles de Menezes died on July 22, 2005. The Brazilian electrician's family immediately criticised the report, saying they could not believe that Metropolitan Police head Sir Ian Blair did not know about the mistake until the next day.

"The police have been allowed to get away with murder," said Patricia da Silva, a cousin of the dead man. "This is a huge injustice and very shameful … we are very dissatisfied with those findings, very disappointed."

Mr de Menezes was shot in the head at point-blank range at a London Underground train station by police, the day after an attempt to launch further suicide bombings following attacks that killed 52 people earlier that month.

Police, who shot Mr de Menezes after following him on to a train at Stockwell station, said at the time they suspected he was a suicide bomber with an explosive belt around his waist. The killing took place amid a huge manhunt for four men who, the day before, had attempted but failed to blow themselves up on three London Underground trains.

Well, of course. Good god, you'd think killing brown people was as bad as double parking.

12. I am not surprised Fox News would use that angle
It appeals to both the fearful and the racist. A lot of people think they are safe from illegal state power because they look middle class, or white, or have a good education or a good job. They are wrong on moral and practical grounds.

13. They are still hiding something.
What I think they are hiding is that those that killed the young man WERE NOT Metropolitan Police officers but either SAS or SBS teams attached to the police at that time.

This has all the earmarks of a classic specops takedown, not a police arrest.
