France's president plans N.H. respite
Source: Boston Globe

France's President Nicolas Sarkozy would not have to stray far from the Champs-Elysées to find a summer holiday spot most Americans can only dream of. A castle in the Loire valley. A country estate in Provence. A villa on the French Riviera.

But non.

Sarkozy, his country's celebrated new leader, is planning to get some rest and relaxation on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee.

Wolfeboro -- a popular vacation destination for countless Bostonians -- is buzzing with excitement about his visit.

David W. Owen, the town manager, said local public safety officials have met with the Secret Service to arrange security.

"We're used to having notables, although not heads of state -- heads of state are a little different class," he said.

I'd hardly call NH "roughing it"—HA.

Sarkozy is wise to come over here. The weak dollar makes America a prime vacation spot to spend those Euros.

1. Didn't he just take a vacation?
Right after he was elected he spent a couple of weeks on a yacht IIRC. He's starting to look a lot more like the lazy SOB currently occupying the White House than I expected.

2. Wolfeboro is a pretty little town filled
with a lot of quite money. And yes, even in NH, we have 21st century technology.

3. Used to be the most ritzy place in the US and if you were
going to run for President you went to Wolfeboro to see the people who had the money. Very rich people and powerful people had homes there. It is also very pretty town and the lake is very nice. It has been a vacation spot since the 1700's. I am sure it would be very different just as we go to Fr. for a vacation.

13. Weather for starters, especially winters - they're nasty and last forever
Not much in the way of amenities. North of Plymouth, everything, besides the basics, is 30 to 40 miles away. The roads are always a mess, thanks again to the winters. And there's something about sitting at the breakfast table with the first cuppa, looking up and a large black bear is looking back at you through the screen door. Not everyone's morning picker upper. Finally, there's the standard joke: What's the difference between yogurt and NH? Only one has a living culture.

Not only that, as a head of state, unlike us peons, Sarkozy won't have to put up with the 3rd degree interrogations from the customs/immigration/homeland security officials intent on detecting any terrorist stupid enough to take an airline flight to America instead of just swimming across the Rio Grande from Mexico.
