Senate Passes Children’s Health Bill, 68-31
Source: NY Times

The Senate defied President Bush on Thursday and passed a bipartisan bill that would provide health insurance for millions of children in low-income families.

The vote was 68 to 31. The majority was more than enough to overcome the veto repeatedly threatened by Mr. Bush. The White House said the bill “goes too far in federalizing health care.”

But Senator Max Baucus, Democrat of Montana and chief sponsor of the bill, said, “Millions of American children have hope for a healthier future tonight.”

The bill would increase spending on the popular Children’s Health Insurance Program by $35 billion over the next five years.

2. I wouldn't be too sure
about anything he would veto, but we will see and as for signing statements well, that goes without saying that he will include one.

3. If he doesn't veto it, he will issue a signing statement that abolishes the program
Why would he want to help kids?

4. Why would Bush want to help kids?
So that they can grow to become healthy young adults in order for him to send them to die in pointless imperialist wars.

Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 11:42 PM by ProudDad
this fucking country will discover that millions of adults have no Health Care...

I won't hold my fucking breath though -- I don't have Health Care...

HR 676 makes more sense than this...but passing that would take real courage...

7. I hear you , and understand where you're coming from, but......
Our country's helpless children SHOULD COME FIRST!! I know I would gladly DIE for my grand children, and I'm living on Social Security and that's it. I'm grateful for what little I can get at my age of 68, and my health failing. At least I have Medicare.

19. Bush says take 'em to the emergency room
Gee whiz, how could you possibly object to that? Meanwhile, Bush has a doctor come to Camp David to look up his ass, Cheney gets a new pacemaker courtesy of the American taxpayer, and John Roberts gets a free trip to the hospital for the best and most prompt medical attention in the world for a pre-existing condition.

You're trying to foment class warfare!

26. We shouldn't have to make that kind of hobsian choice
There's no excuse for not having Universal Single-payer Health CARE...

HR 676 is the way to get it...

Every one covered, costs less, happier Health Care Delivery community. Best of all worlds...

I'm afraid that passing stop-gap measures puts off the day when we get what the civilized world has...

12. Did we get the 2/3rds majority in the house?
Edited on Fri Aug-03-07 02:58 AM by Dr.Phool
I know the insurance companies in Florida are running ads targeting Vern Buchanan. Their strategy is to convince seniors that they're going to lose benefits if the kids get insured.

The only losers in the legislation are the insurance companies and pharmaceutical industries.

All the Tampa Bay area repukes voted against it. Ginny Brown-Waite, Bill Young, Bus Bilirakis, and Howdy Doody Putnam.

on edit:Buchanan voted against it too.

15. No where near 2/3 in the house. Chip doesn't hurt pharma, and in my state it's
administered by Blue Cross. It essentially subsidizes Blue Cross and big pharma to provide basic care to kids whose families make too much to qualify for medi-aide.

18. Interesting defections
On the GOP side: LaHood is retiring, while the other four either had an electoral scare in 2006 or represent a vulnerable district that could go Democratic, like Frank LoBiondo.

On the Democratic side: The Indiana 3 voted no, as did 3 North Carolina Democrats (perhaps because of the tobacco taxes). Bob Ethridge is a tobacco farmer. Jim Marshall is just a DINO.

On my cigarettes. Gawd, I'm getting tired of this shit.

Guess I'll have to quit. What will the kiddies (and everyone else who wants to tax me for their special projects) do then?

23. Health insurance is not the answer.
Insurers are in the business of denying service to boost their bottom line, and some people think that health decisions should be in their hands?

That's just insane.

Universal health care is what's needed, not more money shoveled toward corporations who don't give a fuck about us.

24. "Christian" Family Groups against this bill
As in CWA and FRC. Why? Because there is no specific mention of including "unborn" children, from conception(????)on, in this bill. Excuse me, but in about 99% of cases, treating the pregnant woman is treating the "unborn".

If this doesn't show their true colors, I don't know what does. The hell with living, breathing kids, it's just the FETUS they care about.
