Brazil police find 2 Cuban boxers who went missing during Pan Am Games

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil: Two Cuban boxers who disappeared during last month's Pan American Games were found at a resort near Rio, where police say they partied and ran up an exorbitant tab.

Now, a police inspector says, they want to go back to Cuba.

Two-time Olympic boxing champion Guillermo Rigondeaux and Erislandy Lara were found Thursday at an inn in the coastal resort city Cabo Frio.

"We still have to clear up the reason why they abandoned their delegation and now want to return," federal police inspector Felicio Laterca said. "Right now, they are only saying they are very dear athletes in their country and that's why they want to return."

1. Well that's a new one...
It usually wouldn't make sense for them to flee in Brazil anyways as most boxers end up going east to the bahamas then seeking political asylum in the US.

2. the boxers have 'repented' and want to go home to cuba

An amazing turn here. Brazilian officials are now saying the detained boxers are repentent about their decision and want to go back to Cuba. Apparently spending a couple days with some prostitutes was enough to make the guilt kick in.

4. B-b-b-b-but what about all the people who FLEEEEE from Cuba, who RIIIIISK their lives?
Someone should always mention, as a poster did recently with such flair, "How do these same posters explain the fact that many of them head right on back for visits when they get the chance?"

We know how they explain it. They completely duck the question!

(It may be this back and forth visiting, ultimately, which got George W. Bush to fix it so they can't go there more than once every 3 years, and only to see direct, nuclear family members.)

5. The Cuban government got to them, apparently.
Probably threatened their relatives - they've done that before.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Police found two Cuban boxers who went missing during last month's Pan American Games, authorities said Friday.

Erislandy Lara, 24, and two-time Olympic boxing champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, 25, were found Thursday at an inn in Cabo Frio, a resort city east of Rio. Local police said the pair had wracked up an exorbitant tab and were seen frequently partying in the company of women.

The two boxers want to now return to Cuba, according to federal police inspector Felicio Laterca.

''We still have to clear up the reason why they abandoned their delegation and now want to return,'' Laterca said. ``Right now, they are only saying they are very dear athletes in their country and that's why they want to return.''
