Republicans angry over House vote

By ANDREW TAYLOR, Associated Press Writer 21 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - House Democrats apologized Friday for wrestling what appeared to be a winning vote away from Republicans Thursday night.

Republicans continued to steam, however, over the episode in which they appeared to be the winners by a 215-213 tally on a procedural motion designed to make sure illegal immigrants would not get certain benefits from an agriculture spending bill.

Instead, with several lawmakers milling in the well of the House registering votes, Rep. Michael McNulty, D-N.Y., gaveled the vote to a close, saying the GOP measure had failed on a 214-214 tie.

Republicans erupted, chanting "shame, shame, shame," and then walked out in protest after McNulty permitted further Democrats to switch their votes to prevail 216-212. Despite winning that tally, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., moved for a revote as permitted under the rules, and Democrats prevailed again.

6. Exactly.
But, as is always the case for the do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do crowd, "that's different."

Eat it, reTHUGs.

216-212, you lose. That's how we do it in this country, GOP.

4. What's their beef?
Listening to the press conference, one would think they won the vote.

5. I've watched hours of this garbage, and it wasn't until just now
that I even knew that there was a revote last night, and that the Democrats prevailed on the revote. You're right--from the tone of the press conference in which several whiners in a row spoke about this grave injustice, none of them ever mentioned the revote that did take place.

Do you ever want to stop these idiots mid-sentence and ask, "other than crying and feeling sorry for yourself, what is it you WANT out of this? What should the Democrats do to make you shut the hell up and start working on legislation instead of whining about a screwup that was resolved twice?"

12. Is it
one of those unpopular bills where as many members as possible are allowed to vote against it so long as it passes and someone miscalculated? if so it shows they have really tried hard to provide cover. This routine method of getting bills passed while providing some vulnerable members covered is something they don't like to talk about. With all their hypocritical screaming I wonder if the GOP wants to spell out that practice since the vote was all about providing themselves with some fig leaves on a red meat issue- to distract from all their unpopular votes on the war.

A screw up and an ugly fix and some even uglier "victims".

14. Remember when the Repugs did it to the Democrats?
The Repugs did the same thing on the Medicare vote in 2003.

They even tried to bribe Nick Smith to change his vote.

15. DID I MISS SOMETHING?
From what I read it appears that this bill was supposed to deny illegal aliens certain benefits. What is wrong with that? I certainly can't get
food stamps or any other assistance and I'm disabled. It seems like they are treated better than U.S. ciitzens.
