Rehnquist slams Congress over reducing sentencing discretion
http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/01/01/rehnquist.judiciary/index.html

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The nation's chief justice has sharply criticized Congress over the issues of judicial salaries and laws tightening federal sentencing guidelines.

In his annual report on the federal judiciary, Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist said Congress should have sought the judiciary's advice before limiting judges' ability to impose lighter sentences.

...

Supporters of the law say it will ensure that criminals receive the maximum sentence allowed under the law.

Wasn't this a Ashcroft idea? Sh!t for brains wasn't mentioned in the story...

2. Seems the chief justice
is finally waking up and smelling the coffee... he is the chief of the judiciary and Congress has no say in how the law is enacted

5. maybe more like anointed
from Merriam-Webster:

to choose by or as if by divine election; also to designate as if by a ritual

Either way, not a democratic process...

4. Rehnquist has awakened to his Frankenstein creation.
Some how this was so easy for me to see in December of 2000.
I knew that the judges that sanctioned Bush as president were
going to be stabbed in the back at a later date and time.

And so here we are.

Some how both the House and the Judicial Branch have chosen to
relinquish their powers.

I am happy though the realization has set in and hopefully the powers
that be can resolve this issue. I just hope there is a force behind them.
