Republican rivals renew debate series
By MIKE GLOVER, Associated Press Writer

DES MOINES, Iowa - After something of a hiatus, Republican presidential rivals are returning to the debate stage in a high-profile clash in a format designed to let them engage with each other.

Nine Republican rivals have agreed to join the debate being broadcast from Drake University in the state where precinct caucuses launch the presidential nominating season. ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" will host the debate, with Stephanopoulos serving as moderator.

The 90-minute debate will be broadcast live, meaning the contenders could have one of the largest audiences for their early season debates. They last debated in early June.

The debate comes just one week before a high-profile Iowa Republican straw poll is held that in past cycles has thinned the GOP's field. ABC plans a similar debate among the Democratic contenders Aug. 19, also moderated by Stephanopoulos.

1. Frustrated with Repugs Healthcare......

The candidates are framing the policy debate without discussing basic question philosophical and logistical questions. The basic philosophical question is whether we want to promote a system in the Unites States, where some people are left to die for want of medical care we CAN provide. The logistical question is how to get health care to people. The Repugs all skip over the philosophical question entirely, labeling any discussion as 'socialism'. As for the logistical questions, well that's all framed in how to get more people insured- as though this equates to health care services.

I've decided that, for the Repugs, it's all about corporate subsidy. In this case it's all about how to frame the issues to provide insurance companies and HMOs with the kinds of corporate welfare that has been, until now, reserved for oil and gas companies. *UGH*

3. Is this what we want for society?
Is this what 'democracy' is all about? It scares me where all this corporate welfare may take us as a country....
