Charges threaten Alaska funding pipeline
ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Ethics charges against Alaska's congressional delegation could interfere with the federal funding that keeps the state economy afloat.
The FBI raided Republican Sen. Ted Stevens' house last Monday, searching for evidence that he improperly handled federal funds. His colleague, Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, also is under investigation for corruption.
For most of the state's history, Alaskan congress members were expected to bring pork home for their constituents in the form of large federal works projects and jobs, the Anchorage Daily News reported Sunday.
But the FBI investigation -- and changing attitudes toward federal budget earmarks -- means Stevens, Young and others must change their tactics or lose credibility, and with it the ability to secure federal funds, the newspaper said.
