Few Takers For Bush Climate Plan
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/01/01/tech/main591086.shtml

CBS/AP) Only a tiny fraction of American companies that pollute have signed up for President Bush's voluntary program to reduce emissions of gasses that many scientists believe cause global warming, a newspaper reports.

James L. Connaughton, the White House environmental policy chief, said recently that private firms "are stepping up to the plate in a way they never have -- never did in the 1990s. That's a huge step."

But the Washington Post reports only 50 companies have signed up to be "Climate Leaders," the name of the administrations program inviting businesses to pledge to reduce their emissions by 10 percent.

2. This was in today's WPost - front page!
His global warming plan is a miserable failure. 50 companies signed on. 14 actaully did anything, out of thousands. Well done, George!

4. A fake plan and a free Clinton-bash thrown in by Connaughton

Well paint me with a shitbrush and hang me from the highest tree in town - major corporations aren't falling over themselves to jump aboard Chimpy's voluntary greenwash bandwagon!! Par for the course for the Sound Science WhoreCorps

It would appear that the more visionary corporations are now prepared to voluntarily run ads about their committments to solar and wind energy in magazines like Audubon, Atlantic and Harpers. The less visionary corporations are voluntarily contributing to the Greening Earth Society and the Global Climate Coalition.

The remaining 97% of corporations apparently couldn't give a tin shit.

5. No surprise.
bush* did the same thing when governor of Texas (his last elected office). He steamrolled a program for voluntary corporate compliance to emission standards with no enforcement. The results: Houston now has the the MOST POLLUTED AIR in America.

6. Exactly. Business does not do anything unless forced to
in between they bitch and moan and whine and cry and threaten and claim it will jeopardize them to comply and in the end, complaince always costs less than they claim it will and happens in less time than they claim it will take.

Thanks, George Bush, for proving yourself wrong.

7. Oxymoron alert
This is called Voluntary Self-Regulation. Why do they think we make regulations? Duh, cause companies weren't volunteering to do anything except take care of their bottom line.

8. Just curious?
Was there some law that prevented these companies from reducing emissions in the past? I mean, why didn't they just do it on their own?

10. NooNo, you have it all wrong see... The Democrats made them
put all that pollution in the air because it gave union workers jobs to clean it up... yeah, that's it....

The Democrats did it. Made it illegal to reduce pollution.

Yeah, thaty'll work.

11. Voluntary compliance is no compliance
Amazing how average citizens can't be trusted not to speed, cheat on taxes, run red lights, default on student loans, etc. but corporations can be trusted to voluntarily comply with regulations that will cost them money. Frankly, by the principles of the free market, any corporation that complied voluntarily would be cheating their shareholders.

Think about mad cow disease, the next time you hear the phrase voluntary compliance.
