US border cop charged with murdering Mexican
Tue Aug 7, 2007 1:19AM EDT

BISBEE, Ariz., Aug 6 (Reuters) - A U.S. Border Patrol agent must
stand trial for murder in the shooting of a Mexican man trying
to enter the United States, an Arizona judge ruled Monday in a
case that drew criticism from Mexico.

Agent Nicholas Corbett was charged in April with four counts of
homicide in the Jan. 12 shooting of Francisco Dominguez Rivera
shortly after he crossed the border illegally on a stretch of
desert between Douglas and Naco.

Cochise County Justice of the Peace David Morales ruled the
evidence supported lesser charges of second-degree murder,
but threw out charges of first-degree murder, which supposes
premeditation.

The ruling followed a preliminary hearing that heard evidence
from three illegal immigrants present at the shooting, a
pathologist, county sheriff's detectives and two Border Patrol
supervisors.

1. When my brother got out of the army he tried to join the border patrol.
He said to me that he wanted a job "where I can shoot people and get away with it."

I have often thought about that since then. What did he know about the border patrol that made him think he could get away with shooting at people? How often does this happen, and how rarely does it get prosecuted?

2. You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your kin.
I remember Jimmy saying that.
Sorry about your brother.

10. Your brother is not indicitive of the soldiers I know
I do not know anyone who, when they left the army, got a job just so that they could shoot people.

That being said, I think that the border patrol officer should be given the benefit of the doubt and not lynched by the media before the trial.

5. No one should be convicted without a trial! We don't know all the
facts until the facts come out. Are border patrol like the police in that the police are allowed to shoot someone if they do not obey the command to stop?

9. Police are NOT allowed to shoot someone for failing to stop.
Although they used to do that in Mexico. It was called the ley de fuga (law of flight).

Running from a cop is not (should not be) a capital offense.

6. The real crimninal in this is the MEXICAN OLIGARCHY THAT
IS OPPRESSING THE CITIZENS SO MUCH THAT THEY HAVE TO FLEE TO EARN ENOUGH MONEY TO BUY FOOD. Mexico has more BILLIONAIRS than Switzerland. It is one of the most greed infested, money worshipping, oligarchies in the world. And Bush supports this type of greed infested government. The Mexican people are fleeing because of the oppression.

8. Oh c'mon
The trade agreements the US signs with other countries helps to create this terrible situation.

Mexico's in good company. :sarcasm:

The alleged crime here is that someone got shot by a US border patrolman ... period.
