Second disease outbreak confirmed
Source: BBC

A second case of foot-and-mouth has been confirmed at another Surrey farm, near the site of the first outbreak.
Ministry Defra said 102 cattle had been culled at the site, inside the 3km protection zone around the farm where the virus was confirmed on Friday.

...
One line of inquiry is that floodwater may have contributed to the accidental release of the virus from one of the labs. Both say they are confident in their bio-security measures.

2. I was horrified to read

that the problem may have been caused by waste flooding out to where it shouldn't have done.
Hopefully the precautions at Porton Down, the UK's equivalent of the USA's centre in Maryland are better. http://www.eaec.org/dove/bio-warfare.htm

Having thought about this a bit more WTF was anything like that doing in the drainage system anyway ? All unsealed drainage finishes up in the general pool eventually.

I'd like responsibilities were cleared, really.
And I'd like to see those who are guilty punished, really.

4. "Countryside alert over outbreak " - BBC update - and a report in The Guardian about the source
Edited on Tue Aug-07-07 02:01 PM by demoleft
"Emergency plans have been activated in the areas bordering the foot-and-mouth outbreak in Surrey.
The 10km surveillance zone set by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) reaches Hampshire and the Berkshire border.
...
A spokesperson said: "The Army stresses that this is a purely precautionary measure, and asks the general public not to be alarmed and think that the protected zones and surveillance zones are larger than they actually are."
...
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has urged the public not to panic."

BBC, http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/6933869.stm

There seems to be no peace for UK these months.

The Guardian reports bad news about the origin: "Report points to research site as foot and mouth source", is the title.

"An investigation into the outbreak of foot and mouth disease at a farm in Surrey has concluded there is a "strong probability" it originated at a nearby research institute.
The first of two outbreaks confirmed so far affected cattle on a farm near the village of Normandy, outside Guildford. The research institute in nearby Pirbright was suspected as a source."
