Romney Speaks Up for Sons (decision not to enlist)
Source: AP

BETTENDORF, Iowa (AP) - Despite his call for the nation to show a ``surge of support'' for U.S. forces in Iraq, Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Wednesday defended his five sons' decision not to enlist.

The former Massachusetts governor said his sons were showing their support for the country by ``helping get me elected.''

Romney, who did not serve in Vietnam due to his Mormon missionary work and a high draft lottery number, was posed the question by an anti-war activist after a speech in which Romney saluted a uniformed soldier in the crowd and called for donations to military support organizations.

Last week the presidential candidate donated $25,000 to seven such organizations.

``The good news is that we have a volunteer Army and that's the way we're going to keep it,'' Romney told some 200 people gathered in an abbey near the Mississippi River that had been converted into a hotel. ``My sons are all adults and they've made decisions about their careers and they've chosen not to serve in the military and active duty and I respect their decision in that regard.''

Half the soldiers serving and dying in the Sandbox are National Guard. That's why they weren't available to do disaster work when the twisters hit Tennessee.

6. Suppose his sons sport 'Yellow Ribbons ' on their vehicles?
<snip>
Romney noted that his middle son, 36-year-old Josh, was completing a recreational vehicle tour of all 99 Iowa counties on Wednesday and said, "I respect that and respect all those and the way they serve this great country."

The woman who asked the question, 41-year-old Rachel Griffiths of Milan, Ill., identified herself as a member of Quad City Progressive Action for the Common Good, as well as the sister of an Army major who had served in Iraq.

"Of course not," Griffiths said when asked if she was satisfied with Romney's answer. "He told me the way his son shows support for our military and our nation is to buy a Winnebago and ride across Iowa and help him get elected."

Heck, it would be a done deal that Josh would be a REMF, even under a democratic administration. Someone needs to convince Romney et al. that they need to volunteer one of the boys to the 'Mean Green Fighting Machine' stat., and Josh fits the bill in my eyes. The military may even have the old delayed entry programs - Sign now go later, lake say, right, after the GOP convention when Mitt is put out to pasture.

15. The best way to support the troops is to RELIEVE them ...

The guys in the field have done their job. It's time to give them relief.

This means, either bring them home OR replace them. So if you're FOR continuing the war, then naturally you should enlist. Don't give me that family and business crap. Our soldiers have both families and businesses that they have forgone for the sake of serving this nation. They've done their job, it's YOUR turn if you want to keep things going.

Cheney's Five Draft Deferments During the Vietnam Era Emerge as a Campaign Issue
By KATHARINE Q. SEELYE

Published: May 1, 2004

While Mr. Cheney's deferment history was briefly an issue when George W. Bush picked him as his running mate in 2000, the Democrats did not focus on it after Al Gore, the Democratic presidential nominee, who had served in Vietnam, picked as his running mate Senator Joseph Lieberman, who also had not served.

The issue also received little attention during Mr. Cheney's Senate confirmation hearings as defense secretary in 1989 under the first President Bush, largely because the Armed Services Committee had just completed a bitter and protracted battle over the president's original choice, John G. Tower. Mr. Tower had faced questions about philandering, drinking and conflicts over defense contracts before he was rejected.

Senators of both parties were so eager to confirm Mr. Cheney quickly that they were relatively undemanding, not pressing him on the draft but merely asking him if he had anything to say about it. He said he "never served" because of deferments to finish a college career that lasted six years rather than four, which he attributed to subpar academic performance and the fact that he had to work to pay for his education. He added that he "would have obviously been happy to serve had I been called."

Away from the hearing room, he told the Washington Post that he had sought his deferments because "I had other priorities in the 60's than military service."

They all served, in various ways. One was career Air Force and was in Vietnam three times, one was with the Apollo program after he left the Air Force, etc. All served proudly. Of course, we were very poor. We did, however, excel at many things. We weren't blessed with money, but we had good brains, good looks and good breaks. Thank you, God.

He went on to say, "I think everyone knows that conservatives don't fight wars - we start them, cheer for them, and mock the people who actually do fight them, but our commitment ends before someone actually points a gun at us". Chris Matthews described this as a bold, manly, leaderly answer, and wondered aloud why Dems like John Kerry and Max Cleland aren't that manly.

121. My guess is that one would be the old wingnut standby
the "football injury". Amazing how many aging chickenhawks didn't serve in Viet Nam, and how many young hardline sofa warriors won't enlist now, due to the high school "football injury" which prevents their passing a military physical. Only, they weren't on the high school football team. But, hey, it sounds better than "I'm just a guy who talks really loudly and blathers a lot about the military and victory" but I really have no concept whatsoever about the reality of military service and I don't really care because I consider myself superior to all those soldiers anyway."

and was probably quite influential in their college/career choices ("real estate developers, sports marketers and advertising executives" all working toward the Common Good...).

Mitt trying to equate campaign volunteering to military service is complete and utter bullshit and he needs to be called on it far and wide. I can't imagine his comments sitting well with any military family (R or Dem), so keep talking Mitt, and here's some more rope...

Wonder how long before something hits YouTube and whether the Five Brothers will have the nuts to post it to their blog. I haven't read it yet, but perhaps it explains their stance on the war. I'd wager that it ain't "anti".

Any and all of them who support it should be enlisting. I'm taking a big leap here and guessing that not one of them is anti-war.

Same thing for Jenna and Barbara. I think they should sign up unless they are anti-war. The odds of that are slim and none (another big guess hazarded).

82. Since they are actively campaigning for him, and he wants to increase the # of troops by 100,000,
the sons have some serious explaining to do as to why they are unwilling to do their part. If they had not chosen to involve themselves in the campaign or in support of his policy proposals that would endanger others but not themselves, I could cut them some slack.

Romney Says He Wants 'Big Stick'
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 4:17 p.m. ET

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) -- Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney said Saturday that if he's elected, he wants ''to carry the big stick'' by increasing the size of the nation's military.

The former Massachusetts governor said his plans include boosting the size of the military by at least 100,000 troops and increasing the military budget.>>>

58. Well, I think he has to be one of the dumbest candidates this time around.
In late November 2008, we can all be thankful that all of them will join the military, when he no longer needs any help getting elected, whether he gets elected or not. The Army should meet its recruitment goals for November 2008. In fact, they could all enlist now, and delay reporting until November 2008.

The ruling class is above military service. They have much more patriotic and important things to do here in the States. They are working hard to make money and prove what a wonderful capitalist system we have. They also have to fight the culture war here at home against evil commie anti-American libruls who only want to destroy the USA. Working class people are more prepared for the dirty work in the military. And, like republicans say:

"They volunteered - - Fuck 'em!"

Witness John Kerrey, with his castle in France and all the Forbes money, and the Kennedys. . . even the second worst officer with whom I ever served, Tommy TwoBars, was a Gillette heir and Princeton grad, but he did his six years in the USN.
My old XO was a member the Frick family and he is an admiral now!

He creeps me out. In an interview a few months ago he said he met his wife when she was 15 and she was hot. He could've said she was lovely or sweet at 15. But he chose to call her HOT! Considering that some mormon men marry off their underage daughters or marry girls who are underage it makes him sound like a pervert. Did anyone else hear this? For some reason this bothers me more than the Bush twins partying or Nicole Bush's drug problems. This gets to the heart of RW elitist sense of entitlement. The idea that others do so we don't have to. It's offensive and arrogant.

The Mitwit boys are symbols of Repug hypocrisy. Their idea of service to our country is riding around in a Winnebago campaigning for their Dad. Actually enlist and take some burden off some soldier who is on his 4th tour? Fat chance.

How amazingly awful that this "candidate" has sons who generally have better things to do. Tell that to those who have lost everything in this war; their lives, for example.

is still eligible to enlist. The max age for enlistment was moved out to 40-42 range a few years ago when the military was really hurting for bodies...I too don't want my kids to serve and I've been in the Army for 30 years now, Active, Guard and Reserve...I'll be retiring from Active Duty in a few more years, but I still don't want my kids to have to see and do what I've done over the years. There are other forms of public service to the nation besides military that I find acceptable, PeaceCorps, Teaching, Cop, Fireman, hospital/hospice volunteer....but riding around in a Winnebago to help Pop get elected doesn't count...
