Indonesia's West Java hit by strong earthquake

JAKARTA, Aug 9 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake with a 7.0 magnitude has hit Indonesia's West Java island, a telephone text message from the country's Meteorological agency said on Thursday.

The quake struck 75 km (46.60 miles) northwest of Indramayu and was at a depth of 286 km, the agency said. The quake could be felt by residents in the capital Jakarta.

WASHINGTON, Aug 8 (Reuters) - An earthquake that hit
Indonesia on Wednesday was at magnitude 7.4 and 282.1
km (175.3 miles) deep, the U.S. Geological Survey
said on its Web site.

The quake was too deep to prompt a tsunami warning,
said Robert Cessaro at the U.S. National Weather Service's
Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The quake took place at 12:05 a.m. local time on
Thursday (1705 GMT on Wednesday). Its epicenter was
112 km (70 miles) from Jakarta.
