Leahy sets final deadline for wiretapping docs

By Kara Oppenheim
August 08, 2007
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) Wednesday set an Aug. 20 deadline for the Bush administration to produce documents related to the panel’s probe of the National Security Agency’s wiretapping program.

“Despite my patience and flexibility, you have rejected every proposal, produced none of the responsive documents, provided no basis for any claim of privilege and no accompanying log of withheld documents,” Leahy said in a letter to White House Counsel Fred Fielding.

On June 27, the committee had issued subpoenas to the Department of Justice, the National Security Council, the White House Office and the Office of the Vice President to provide documents in conjunction with the controversial program.

The files were originally due July 18, but Fielding and White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten requested an extension to allow for a more thorough collection and review of documents. Leahy said the two White House officials, in a phone conversation, had indicated that they might only need until Aug. 1 to complete that task.

1. And if the administration fails to meet
this new deadline, congress will act quickly to dissolve and turn all it's remaining ceremonial duties over to the White House.

5. "And this time I really mean it!"
Why should the WH respond to any request Leahy makes? There are no consequences to ignoring him. All he does is write another letter warning them that they better get him whatever it is he wants. I'll bet they sit there and guffaw when they get one of those letters.

6. Leahy and the committee are drafting a strongly worded letter in the event Bushco doesn't comply
Well, if they can get all the Senators to agree on the language of the letter, that is. We wouldn't want to make the White House mad, and get removed from the DC cocktail party circuit.

7. Hey, Pat, my man, after the Dems performance last weekend with the FISA bill—
do you really think we're gonna buy that? The stamping of the feet and all? Who's giving you principled-stance acting lessons, Arlen Specter?

I don't think we've exactly seen the end of your flexibility. Although around my way we call it having round heels.
