NWS: F2 Tornado Confirmed In Brooklyn
Source: WCBSTV

What was thought to be a violently windy thunderstorm that plowed through Brooklyn Wednesday morning turned out to be a weather event of historical proportions.

The National Weather Service confirmed that the storm brought with it Brooklyn's first ever tornado since such weather events were recorded. Officials measured it to be an E-F2 twister, with winds gusting to approximately 111 miles per hour.

A tornado warning had been issued in Brooklyn from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m., and during that time a severe thunderstorm blew through the borough, taking trees, power lines, pieces of rooftops and whatever else it could with it.

Only a few minor injuries, fortunately, were reported.

"About 6:35 this morning it sounded like a freight rain coming down the driveway. The house was shaking and people were screaming," said Linda Mantia, who lives in the Bay Ridge section.

7. "Global warming is just a hoax...
perpetrated by Wall Street to make money."*

Right. That's why NJ resembles Southern Florida these days, London's had a tornado, Australian farmers are committing suicide, and there was a tornado in Brooklyn this week. In Brooklyn!! :wtf:

*actual quote from my only Republican friend. He used to accept global warming, and make fun of his Repub BIL for denying it. A few short years later, he's too full of Bush's catapulted propaganda, assisted by Glenn Beck, Fox News, and CNSNews to know which freakin' end is UP!

If I could say one thing to my Republican friend, it would be: "we must just pray that when your head's finished turning, your face is to the front again."

25. That reminds me of something my son said when Mel Gibson's movie
Signs came out. He mentioned that practically everyone in certain places is well-armed these days. He could just see some alien getting his ass kicked by a bunch of guys in one of our rougher neighborhoods.

13. I Wrote A Story A Few Years Ago That Climaxed W/ A Tornado In Bklyn
Edited on Wed Aug-08-07 08:01 PM by Beetwasher
and the protagonist being chased down 5th ave. trying to get away and being sucked up into the funnel. It was fantasy then. Not anymore.

On edit: now that I think about it, it wasn't a few years ago, it was more like 8 years ago! My how time flies.

16. Holy Crap! Weather! In New York!
Hold the phone!

It was a bit strange this morning, but the fun days of my youth picked up and I thought about moving into the closet (as we have no basement) but then it seemed to pass by (passed by like a F2 tornado.)

I live in the immediate Detroit area; city, surrounded by water (Detroit River) and industrialization as far as the eye can see.

Last year, late June, we were visited by a "microburst" (I'd never heard of it, but if you love hail, it's your thing) that left a foot of hail on the ground. All my food crops were utterly decimated (I grow about 1/2 a year's worth of natural - no pesticide - veggies each summer). But it's weird; though I live in a city, I NEVER immediately think tornado or microburst; I think that's for outlying regions. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I guess this story, for me, just goes to show it can happen anywhere. Best wishes to the folks in Brooklyn - there is nothing good about these freakish storms. :-(

19. I didn't need to read this to know...
it's that whole "freight train" sound.

Grew up in Kansas, and I've had "close encounters" with something like 6 tornadoes, including one funnel that passed right over my house and touched down about 2 to 3 miles from us... and they sound like a freight train. I've witnessed or been in a few micro bursts (plus a few tropical storms), but they don't sound like a tornado. It jars your teeth and scares the crap out of you!
