Resistance fighters have shot
down several US helicopters

One US soldier has been killed and one wounded in a helicopter crash near the town of Falluja, west of Baghdad.

A US military spokeswoman said on Friday the helicopter, an OH-58 observation chopper, came down around 12:50 p.m. (09:50 GMT) but had no further details. She said the cause of the crash was under investigation.

"US forces began search operations this morning in Fallujah. They visited grain dealers searching for weapons. They were supported by two helicopters," said witness Waad Ibrahim.

"I watched the two helicopters and suddenly I heard an explosion and one of the two planes caught fire before crashing."

FALLUJA, Iraq (Reuters) - One U.S. soldier was killed and one wounded in a helicopter crash Friday near the Iraqi town of Falluja, and a policeman who witnessed the crash said the aircraft was shot down.

6. The numbers are getting fuzzy again, but
I count 481 dead Americans from this misadventure. Shoot downs, suicides, outright killings, and the idiot press says things are looking up.

Last night on the CBS national, they were saying that the attackers were facing a backlash from Iraqis because there were more of them dying in the bombings. Then, they said that the nightclub that was bombed was a popular place for westerners and wealthy Iraqis.

I thought that doesn't sound like the people resenting being bombed by the freedom fighters, but maybe appropriate targeting.

7. The cause was not known?
But the outcome is quit clear. As if anything can indeed be changed.

8. Day two of 2004. Only 363 to go. The carnage continues.
However, in another 304 days this kind of thing (death, destruction, maiming injury) will mean even less to the Bu$h regime, if they win re-election. I feel a draft brewing.

RIP for the KIA. Speedy recovery for the WIA. God have mercy on the USA.

9. OH 58 Kiowa Warrior? What's it's seating capacity?
Edited on Fri Jan-02-04 10:25 AM by Divernan
Hard to believe anyone aboard survived a crash from any height.
I think one way the military keeps the KIA body count low is to just not declare soldiers dead at the scene of the battle/attack.
ON EDIT: I just read the rest of the posts and learned that apparently only two people were aboard.

10. OH-58 is military version of Bell JetRanger 206
Edited on Fri Jan-02-04 11:16 AM by DemoTex
It is a single-engine (turbine) light observation helicopter. Civilian JetRangers have five seats, including the pilot. The OH-58 is sometimes used for admin flights, too (shuttling the colonels around).
