Mad Cow Scare Now Hurting State Potato Industry
Mad Cow Scare Now Hurting State Potato Industry

By Carleen Johnson

SEATTLE - Another unexpected spin-off from the mad cow scare, could spell bad news for more than just the beef industry.

Washington state potatoes are now being held hostage by Asian markets.

The problem is beef tallow, which is used to pre-fry some potato products like french fries, before they are packaged and shipped overseas.

<snip>

"Japan is our number one export market frozen french fries, so yes, it is a concern," said Shannon Bornsen, the director of International Trade at the Washington State Potato Commission.

<snip>

At risk is an export market for frozen potato products that brought in $225 million for Northwest exporters last year.

3. No fries either?
Is there anything left to eat that isn't somehow tainted by beef? Guess I'm going to have to read every label of every food product I buy.

4. I thought McDonalds was the only major user of beef tallow in fries
are other suppliers/retailers getting into this ugly game of tainting fries for vegetarians without telling them?

6. Unhealthy, sneaky practices coming back to bite them in the butt
Buy organic, pay more, eat less, do your own cooking when you can, and enjoy the priceless benefit of peace of mind and better health.

Fries are so easy to cook. Wash that tater, stick it in a slicer, brown the fries slightly with olive oil or your choice of canola oil or whatever, put them in the oven at 375 for maybe half an hour. Nice and crispy and incredibly tasty compared to any frozen garbage in your local store's freezer department.

7. that is what I do
I try to buy as much organic food as possible. I do all of my own cooking being there aren't any "organic" restaurants that I am aware of where I live. That right there saves the difference in cost, because many people eat out several times a week and its not cheap at all.

I have found that some organic foods are not more costly than the overpriced Safeway crap, esp. fruit and vegetables believe it or not!

I recently had major surgery and have stuck to the organic regiment. The doctors are shocked by my quick recovery. I think that alone says a lot.

I do not eat red meat. I eat a small amount of organic free-range chicken or fish once or twice a week and drink organic milk (yummmmm if you haven't discovered this!).

Much to be said for quality food!

Remember: You know that what you eat you are!

:dem: :kick:

P.S. Thanks for the french fries recipe! :D

8. Maybe it's time to go back to "real cooking" and "real food"
The whole idea of "right now, dammit, food" has come and should be GONE.. Are people is such a freaking hurry that they need their fries "pre-cooked" in beef tallow (for flavoring).. Shouldn't a fry taste like a potato??

Fries taste better when they are fried in vegetable oil anyway:)
