Nelson (D-Ne) drops request for millions in funding

WASHINGTON - Without fanfare, Sen. Ben Nelson has dropped his request for a $7.5 million earmark for an Omaha-based defense company that employs his son.

The Nebraska Democrat wrote letters last week to Senate committee chairmen dropping his request for funding from a defense authorization bill of two projects that would have been executed by 21st Century Systems.

"I believe these projects to be meritorious, however, I wish to withdraw them out of an abundance of caution," Nelson wrote.

He wrote that he was acting out of caution because of new ethics legislation approved last week by the House and Senate.
