Pelosi urged to impeach Bush

STAMFORD — Two dozen people armed with placards and petitions turned out today to beseech House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to push for impeachment of President Bush.

But Pelosi, a Democratic congressman from California, avoided the demonstrators by slipping into Il Falco restaurant through a back entrance cordoned off by police.

"She doesn't like opposition," said Marilyn Bonoff of Stamford, one of those demanding that proceedings be launched to force Bush from office. "We are the people she represents. For her to dodge us is just not right."

Pelosi was in Stamford for a fund-raising luncheon benefiting U.S. Rep. Christopher Murphy, D-5. Several Democratic politicians including Mayor Dannel Malloy and state legislators from the area, attended...

39. Message from Representative Nancy Pelosi
August 10, 2007

Stimbox
San Francisco, California 94109-3679

Dear Stimbox:

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for impeachment
proceedings against President George W. Bush. I appreciate hearing
from you.

This war has resulted in the loss of more than 3,600 American lives,
wounded more than 16,000 of our men and women in uniform, ended or
shattered countless Iraqi lives, and cost American taxpayers more than
$500 billion. Searches failed to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq
which were the President's justification for the war. President Bush's
recent commutation of Scooter Libby's prison sentence is further
demonstration of his failure to hold his Administration accountable and
to uphold the rule of law.

The American people elected Democrats to Congress to take the country
in a New Direction - ending the war in Iraq, making America safer and
more secure, raising the minimum wage, promoting energy
independence, preventing global warming, making college more
affordable, addressing the health care crisis and on making government
more accountable.

We are continuing to fight for change every day on these and other issues
to improve the lives of all Americans. There is no more important task
before us than to bring our troops home safely and soon, and we will
continue to work to do so. I believe impeachment proceedings against
the President will distract us from our mission to achieve that goal.

At the same time, through oversight and investigations we are continuing
to look into allegations of fraud, waste and government corruption
throughout the Bush Administration, and to demand changes in policies
promoted by special interests and corrupt officials. Since the beginning
of the 110th Congress, the House Committee on Oversight and
Government Reform has conducted more than 65 oversight hearings.
Please be assured that upholding Congress' constitutional responsibility
to serve as a check and balance to the Executive Branch will continue to
be among my highest priorities.

Thank you again for your interest in this issue. For more information on
this and other issues affecting our country, I invite you to visit my Web
site at www.house.gov/pelosi. I hope you will continue to communicate
with me on matters of concern to you.

Sincerely,

Nancy Pelosi
Member of Congress

She's beginning to remind me of the "do as I say, not as I do" crowd more and more all the time. She keeps talking about the desires of the American people, yet she won't address our demands.

The American people want impeachment put on the table. She works for us. Something stinks.

Let's be realistic. There's is really zero possibility that she would be defeated. That does not negate the efforts to pressurize her and others into taking a correct stance on the war.

31. I know...
I just cannot see it happening. The "official" segments of the city will rally around Pelosi, who is, after all, speaker and therefore confers status to the city. I wouldn't be surprised if Sheehan got 10-15% of the vote and out-polled the GOP candidate, but I cannot see better than that - though I'd like it.

What I would like in the long run is Sheehan in congress, as a Democrat from another district in the bay area. If Woolsey ever retires, I'd see Sheehan as an excellent replacement. I see her role now mainly as a means to pressurize the Democrats into taking active measures to end the war. In that, I support her as well.

23. Just to point out that the first site is pretty dodgy
Edited on Fri Aug-10-07 07:55 AM by LeftishBrit
"wakeupfromyourslumber" is a decidedly dodgy site. It includes articles supporting Christopher Bollyn; backing Ron Paul as a presidential candidate (not just over other Republicans, but over Democrats); proposing that 9-11 was organized by Mossad as a 'false flag operation'; and making allegations of "Jewish anti-Christianity" in the media and entertainment. It also links to lots of other sites, some of which are reasonable progressive and anti-war sites, but also including far-right hate-sites such as What Really (Never) Happened, Serendipity, Ziopedia and The Truth Seeker. (Not to mention simply nutty sites like "Uncensored" which argues that the British foot-and-mouth outbreak is a sinister plot by Gordon Brown's government).

I wouldn't rely on anything posted there.

14. Sorry, Onehandle, that won't work. She's the one who said, "Impeachment is off
the table." (WHAT table, Nancy?)

It is up to the voters of her district--and to the rest of us, whom the House Speaker supposedly represents--to decide what to make of that. To be forgiving, and figure she bargained it away, say, in exchange for no attack on Iran (and maybe getting rid of Rumsfeld)? Or to be unforgiving, and figure that, whatever bargain she made, since the American People were not at the table, it was a blow to democracy, the rule of the law and the U.S. Constitution? (Is there any higher "high crime or misdemeanor" than leading the country into unnecessary war, on behalf of your oil cronies?)

Anyway, the record of the Diebold II Congress is shockingly bad. If the Iraq were being stopped, instead of grossly escalated and re-funded, it would be easier to forgive this 'Democratic' Congress' other failures and crimes. And Pelosi as House Speaker IS responsible for the record of this Congress. She furthermore DOES have tremendous power on the impeachment issue. Also, I disagree that it is "not the Speaker's job" to impeach criminal presidents and vice presidents. Thomas Jefferson, James Madison & co. COUNTED ON the leaders of the House to be a bastion against presidential tyranny. It specifically IS her job!

20. There are hundreds of other Representatives with the power to put it "back on the table".
Why focus on Pelosi. She isn't literally the boss of them.

When she said that, she was working to take back the House.

Now that she's Speaker, it's up to others to start Impeachment.

Talk to your Representative tomorrow. Keep calling until they start proceedings.

43. What does it matter?
Pelosi TOOK IT OFF THE TABLE. She'll let the Congress vote on giving Bush a blank check for the war after saying she wouldn't, and won't let a vote occur on the floor for impeachment. H.R.333 is an impeachment bill...Pelosi won't let it see the light of day. She doesn't even want to DEBATE impeachment...she doesn't want the judiciary committee to investigate the need for it.

She took it off the table, and she can put it back on the table.

Leadership is all about LEADING.

16. Unfortunately, in spite of all the criminality and profiteering
croneyism of this admin, there is very little chance of an impeachment succeeding. This is the most intractable bunch of well connected, powerful family elitists ever to run the white house. The congress needs to deny this president access to as much money and other power as possible, but impeachment is beyond their reach.

18. She graciously accepted a petition here in Santa Barbara
Nancy Pelosi came here for a fundraiser, and a friend of mine who attended carried an impeachment petition to her. The word my friend used about Pelosi's attitude was "gracious."

I'm pleased to think I might have had a hand in this by telling a mutual friend about an idea I read here at DU of signing and sending paper plates to Pelosi with the message "Put impeachment back on the table!" She went on a search for something she could fancy up, found a large "gold" plastic plate, added glitter and the message, and passed it around for signatures.

That's what was given to Nancy Pelosi.

I don't know what her behavior will be in the near future, but there's no doubt the Speaker of the House is receiving the message. Keep those cards and letters coming folks.

People do not rationalize the time it takes to investigate a charge find proof of the crime then run this up through the House and the Senate not that it would matter anyway because all the coward Repubs would vote in lock step party line regardless of the proof presented and Joe Lieberman would fall over backwards to help and aquit bushie....

So I think the Impeachment point is moot... in just over a year we have a new POTUS...
