Bush cracks down on employers who hire illegal immigrants
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON – The Bush administration announced Friday a crackdown on employers who hire illegal immigrants, a move that could dry up the labor pool for Southern farmers and landscapers and the construction and hospitality industries.

"The magnet that brings most economic migrants to this country is work," said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. "If we have worksite enforcement directed at illegal employment, we strike at that magnet."

The announcement comes weeks after Congress failed to pass an immigration overhaul bill the Bush administration had supported. Chertoff said he has no option now but to enforce the existing immigration law.

"We don't get a vote in Congress, but we have to make Congress understand the consequences of its actions," Chertoff said.

3. I'll believe it when I see it! That requirement was in the last
agreement from the Reagan era too, but it was never enforced. Talk is cheap! Let's see if he really does it!

8. Yes, employers were already supposed to be punished under a 1986 law.
Of course, if the enforcement arm of government doesn't actually enforce the law...

Oh, never mind.

5. That's what most people want in the first place
So the consequences of Congress's action is that Idiot Son will actually enforce the law now? How nice of him to actually do his job.

6. And who loves cheap labor
yes, that's right, his big fat Repricklickin' base. Not us. Those poor migrant workers, work their asses off. I wish I was a billionaire and could stand at the border and hand each of them a million dollars to stay home. Let the worshipful Reprick farmers' fuckin' crops rot off the trees. Bastards. Rotten bastards.

9. It's about damn time.
There's no reason we can't put some employers in jail while we send the illegals back home. Both need to be done.

13. You stole my line.
I was thinking the exact same thing - "it's about damn time." People don't seem to realize (or care) what a serious problem illegal immigration has become.

17. But of course!
He loves all that cheap illegal labor for himself and his cronies. He just talks the talk, but even most neo-cons know he's completely on the side of allowing illegal immigration to go unchecked.

12. He knows it's the only way he can get congress to give him more h1Bs
Bush wants more H1Bs so his friends in the banking & insurance industries can hire Indian & Chinese programmers, putting American programmers out of work. And construction workers will finally make a living wage again once the illegals are out of the job market.

14. This is so transparent
This is a blatant expression of an imperial executive, use human beings as pawns in a political
chess game.

I'm against illegal immigration, for legal immigration and controlled borders but that is the last thing bushco is concerned with.

This is a bunch of lip service from the kings of dishonesty. If he were to do this, it would be the first good thing he's ever done.
