WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The long-awaited trial of lawsuit accusing a Mobile pastor of pressuring a mentally ill woman to donate her $1.8 million inheritance to a Florida church when he was the pastor there has been delayed after the judge stepped down.
Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Kenneth Stern recused himself Monday, four days into jury selection, after what was called "relentless" legal moves by lawyers for the pastor, Keith Thomas.
Thomas, who has been pastor of the 1,500-member Cottage Hill Baptist Church in Mobile since 2003, was formerly pastor of First Baptist Church of West Palm Beach in Florida.
In a suit filed in 2004, former Palm Beach resident Lucinda Bennett claims Thomas and other church leaders convinced her to donate a large amount of money she inherited in 2000 as a way to please God, the Palm Beach Post reported.
