Ambulances, Med Chopper Seen Racing To Coal Mine
Source: KUTV

(KUTV) HUNTINGTON - At least five ambulances and a medical helicopter raced to the coal mine near the town of Huntington on Thursday evening to provide emergency medical treatment -- although it was not immediately clear why.

Witnesses saw the ambulances arrive at the Crandall Canyon coal mine at approximately 7:15 p.m. Thursday. Authorities also reportedly cleared the road so that the emergency vehicles could race to the mine. Civilian vehicles were also seen racing to the coal mine, presumably containing officials from the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

2News reporter Katie Baker observed two of the ambulances racing back down the canyon, with EMTs performing chest compressions on victims in the back. It was not immediately made clear who the victim or victims are, or what happened to cause injury.

Rescue crews are currently drilling a 4th hole into the mountain, near the area where sounds were detected on Wednesday, while a team is trying to dig into the mountain horizontally.

2. they wouldn't be doing CPR on a cave-in survivor
Edited on Thu Aug-16-07 09:14 PM by Gman
(The original cave-in, that is) Something happened. Probably another collapse, as you say. I saw a report the other day that some of the rescuers were asking to be relieved because the situation was too dangerous.

5. ABC: One dead, 4 injured in new mine collapse
http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=nation_world&id=5525454

"According to ABC 4 in Utah, Castleview Hospital in Price has confirmed there has been another collapse at the Crandall Canyon Mine.

An unidentified official at that hospital says there was a "mountain bump" inside the mine. A bump commonly refers to pressure inside the mine that shoots coal from the walls with great force.

KSL radio is reporting four miners have been injured in that collapse, but neither report has been confirmed by officials.

ABC 4 also reports a medical helicopter has been sent to the area and at least three ambulances were seen heading toward the Crandall Canyon Mine "

7. There have been some seismic bumps -
which is not to say an earthquake - but something big enough to register happened in the mine. I suppose the idiot mine owner will claim another earthquake - even if no one else in the area felt a tremor.

9. When you do retreat mining
It makes the whole damn mine unsafe. Earthquake no, just the mine collapsing. The Owners should be tried and sent to jail. They would be in Europe, in fact, I don't think retreat mining is legal in Europe.

10. MSNBC was reporting on something they called a "mountain bump"
Which seems like a very silly name for an exploding wall. When mine shafts are dug, the walls sometimes rebound explosively due to the sudden lack of confining pressure. Generally this happens shortly after excavation, so I am not sure if this is a new shaft, or some sort of collapse of a preëxisting wall.

16. I don't think there will be any survivors either, but don't you think
they still have to try to get the bodies out? Doesn't the mine owner owe their families that much"?

I also think it's time to halt the rescue mission. They've given it all they have. They should not have to lose anymore miners/people in this mission. "Know when to fold...."

I'm hoping Mr. Murray wasn't pushing this mission beyond which was humanly safe for the rescuers.

21. I'm afraid that's exactly what happened
In an effort to deflect culpability from himself he sent these rescuers on a risky mission which resulted in death and injury to them.

At the very least he should be removed from the site and someone else (mine workers union?) take over the rescue operation.
