Russia Delivers Air Defence Units To Syria: Report
Source: AFP

17 Aug 2007, 1407 hrs IST,AFP

MOSCOW: Russia has begun delivery of modern air defence units to Syria while rejecting speculation that some of the weapons could be forwarded secretly to Iran, a newspaper reported on Friday.

"The first part of the delivery to Syria has started," the centrist daily Nezavissimaya Gazeta reported, quoting information from a domestic military information agency.

A spokesman for Russia's arms export agency Rosoboronexport, however, declined to comment on the newspaper report.

The report acknowledged that the delivery of the weapons, the Pantsyr-S1E self-propelled short-range missile air defence system, was particularly sensitive in light of Israeli claims last year that Russian arms sold to Syria had ended up in the hands of militant group Hezbollah.

2. Russia and Syria have a long-standing military relationship.
Of course certain forces want a war against Syria, so this is demonized.

5. Difference: this time we all are in it for the money.
All the major arms dealers are motivated by profits and not ideology.

10. Russia Sends 50 Missiles To Syria
Source: TELEGRAPH, REUTERS

RUSSIA has begun delivering 50 anti-aircraft missiles to Syria. An ally of Moscow throughout the Cold War, the Syrian regime is a key supporter of Iran and of Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Pantsyr-S1E anti-aircraft missiles are part of a $A1.11 billion contract signed this year between Syria and Russian state arms firm Rosoboronexport

--
The Kremlin appears increasingly willing to arm countries opposed to US "hegemony". As well as reasserting Russia's status as a great power, this also creates commercial opportunities.

Ivan Safranchuk, the Moscow director of the independent World Security Institute, said: "The idea is that by helping to strengthen the defences of Syria and Iran, Russia creates conditions where the US has fewer chances to resort to force."

13. Any doubt that an attack on Iran or Syria would lead to WWIII?
There's no doubt in my mind. I suspect Putin has already told Bush privately that Russia and China won't stand for an attack on Iran or Syria.

16. It's turning the Middle East into a powder keg. Much like Europe right before World War One
In Europe at the time, two military super blocs emerged: One with Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Italy (in name only), and the other with the British Empire, France, and Czarist Russia. The Ottoman Empire was sort of involved as well because of enmity with Russia. The idea was the size of each military force was so vast and intimidating that war would be less likely. The only problem with the idea was that it failed, utterly, and 10,000,000 soldiers died as a result in that war for no real good reason.

15. Well good! It is about time someone stood up and told the US, "No more!"
The US has run rough-shod over half the world while the other half looked on and wrung its collective hands. I am glad some one has finally said, "Enough!" The US has got to be shown that the kind of murderous, thieving brutality that it has been practicing over the last six years must stop. I just hope other countries join Russia and put a stop to the US's savage aggression.

17. Didn't we send 200,000 rifles to Iraq?
Why is any of this alarmist stuff any different? Plus I highly doubt that any of the stuff that is "lost" is really lost at all. Most of it get's put in as a CIA line item to be traded or delivered to possible allies or lackeys... Warlords and people we can buy off.

Edited on Tue Aug-21-07 04:37 PM by happyslug
NATO name for this weapon is SA-21, it is an product improved version of the SA-19
This weapon represents the next level above hand held AA Missiles, like a Stinger Missile. Effective against low flying targets.
